because of the delays in the finished product of the tpc supercharger for the last year....im moving over to just dropping a 3.4 in.....

my mech says if we buy from porsche it wont come with harness and brain...

better off buying used 3.4 complete and swapping (porsche will charge core charge too)

also read one of the articles on someone with a sc kit and the editor had commented on alot of pinging at wot....

someone upstairs is telling me to just just jump to the engine swap

anyway...any good reasearch on the swap.....want to go through the step by step and know hangups/problems in the swap.....

or do i just go to 3.6?

thanks

Since you have a 99, you will have to go with a 3.4. Pre-2000 Boxsters don't use eGas but 3.6 engines do, and getting them to work together is not easy. Make sure you get a non-eGas 3.4, as there are some eGas 3.4s as well.

thanks steve

i actually have a 2002

so with e gas does this increase potential for 3.6

I wonder how long a 6-speed Boxster transmission (same as the Audi trans?) would hold up to a 3.6 that's been warmed over.

As I've heard it, the Boxster S transmission is nearly identical to the 996 transmission. I've never heard of anyone with either a Boxster or Boxster S transmission having trouble after installing the 996 engine.

hey

I use midwest eurosport

http://www.midwesteurosport.com/contact.html

worked on my 911sc and did decent work

i will be the first brian has worked on for the 986 swap....but have chatted with techart and roock about selling me a built motor and still trying to decide

techart has a 3.2 that they stroked out to a 3.4 so its just a drop in....supposedly has 315 at the crank.....roock has a 3.6 that comes with alot of elecrtical work according to fabian roock...

i essentially want a one of a kind car that will stomp on anything from a viper to a turbo but yet will still be graceful enough to continue on in autocrossing (guess thatll depend on my right foot)

also looking to publish the work as it progresses

That Roock 3.6 looks :censored: evil.

Are you in Chicago?

I'm currently looking at two 's'. One has heated seats and PSM. The other doesn't. Are those options "must haves" in Chicago?

Heated seats is a major plus in all climates.

PSM depends on your experience and needs.

Do you plan to garage your car in winter?

Have you regularly driven a Viper, GT2 or track car?

Can you do 3 perfect bootleg turns in a row?

Do you 4-wheel drift at high speed on purpose?

If you answered yes to ALL the questions above you may not need PSM

If any of those questions is a NO, PSM will probably save your bacon a few times a year. I leave it on at the track and it really doesn't get in the way.

The e-gas engines are pretty much drop in for an e-gas car, so definitely go with either a 3.4 e-gas or 3.6. There are a lot of little things to sort out with the install though, and you will need a new brain or reprogrammed brain. You will NOT need a new wiring harness, the only addition to the Boxster harness will be a pair of wires for the resonance control valve and a single wire for oil pressure (if you want to hook up a meter). The plug for the control valve is the same as for the fuel injectors and for the emissions-control valves so if you can find one of those you can splice. The control valve itself is just an electrically operated vacuum switch, 996.605.123.01. Might come on the factory engine but I don't know.

5 speed and 6 speed transmissions are both more than strong enough for the 320 HP engines. I'd start worrying once you get above 400HP.

I had my Boxster S on the track this last weekend. It was a bit wet and the PSM was a lifesaver. It is a great option to have, not just for wet weather but also if you just get careless and "overcook" it in a corner. either wet or dry. I live in Chicago and the heated seats are nice but not really necessary. I seldom use the heated seats in winter in the Boxster or in my VW Passat. The big problem I have with heated seats in the Boxster is that it is too easy to hit the switch with your elbow. That happened several times last summer. I just removed the fuse and never put it back.

Incidently, on the track you really have to do something extreme to automatically activate the PSM. It only comes into play when when you go a bit over the edge. I am a fairly smooth driver on the track and the only time PSM kicks in the dry is when I accelerate too much and too early coming out of a corner, or if I enter a carousel type corner too hot. It is a nice warning that gets me to smooth out my cornering technique. It is definitely a good option to have.

i would have considered psm but dont drive it in chicagos winter.....and for the same money.....so many other goodies to buy!

truthfully...im very used to being conservative with driving in winter but in naperville......way too many nearsighted minivan drivers trying to get their kids to school by first bell that tailgate like dale ernhart during inclement weather thinking that those stock brake pads will out do my pagids!(sorry ..had to vent)

i used to have recaro heated seats in my 911 and remember many a day opening up the hatch and turning on the seats ....still have them in my volvo if i ever feel the urge to freeze my ears off but would also say for the money.....many other goodies to buy
