I had a tough time at a HPDE day at Laguna Seca last Monday  . My stock RS60 Boxster hit a 98db on a cool gray morning. The max db at Laguna for DE days is 92db. I tried again with the "sport" setting off, and still hit 95+db.

The section of the track where the the sound reading is taken is between turns 5 and 6: up-hill, third gear heading to near redline.

I was able to meet the sound requirement by running through the sound traps in fourth gear, sport mode off, kind of lugging fourth at about 4000 or so revs.

I think I might try fabbing up some tips to turn the sound towards the ground. Something that I can put on that does not alter the stock PSE.

I know that AWE makes "turn down" tips for the GT3 which help lower the measurable db. AWE does not make them for the 987 though.

I would appreciate any leads regarding a manufacturer of pipes that will work on the 987 twin exhaust tips.

I've heard horror stories about the sound 'shack' at laguna Seca. It's designed to be as harsh as possible and not fair at all. A stock car should not fail, even at WOT.

A custom 'turned' set up tips needs to be made by a shop, probably not too bad to have it done.

The outlet on the boxster is a single pipe connected to a trim piece. The outlet already has an angled bend, so if you were to remove the trim and loosen the clamp bolts the outlet could be directed more towards the ground as you require. This would be a no cost option allowing you to return the car to standard spec in a few minutes after your track session. Just an idea but it may be worth a try.

Thanks for the input. Just after I posted my complaint, I searched and found some turn downs made by DynaTech. They can even be ordered with a stainless steel perforated internal cone that is supposed to break up the "raspy" sound that the PSE makes at full song. If I can get the fit right I would be able to direct the tips both down and away from the sound monitor. $89.00 each.

I took some rough measurements of the OD and ID of my PSE and the OD is close to 3 1/2" with the inside being close to 2 1/2". I might order them if I can return them if the fit is to far off to fab into shape (lots of "ifs"). I would have the tips held in place with heat tempered springs (like a motocross M/C expansion chamber setup).

I will post some pictures on this thread if I get further along with this.

Laguna Seca is such a great track. I've been going there since 1965, first as a 10 yr old with my Dad to watch the CAN AM, leading up to being a 20 yr old working on Formula Fords, Formula Atlantic's. Being able to get on track with my Porsche is like a dream come true! I want to keep going. A couple of Porsche specific exhaust parts providers suggested just skipping running at Laguna! Not an option I am willing to accept.

Unfortunately noise restrictions will probably get more stringent than they are now, and at more tracks in the future.

Having driven at Laguna Seca in the early eighties, and now living/driving in southern Arizona where the tracks are as flat as the landscape, I agree with the do what you need to stay. That is pretty amazing though that a stock OEM exhaust would break even Laguna's low limits. We had troubles even then, but with SCCA production cars, not stockers.

Yes Laguna Seca is a piece of history and a must do racetrack. Yes, the 92 db restriction is difficult to meet on anything other than the stock exhaust on a Lexus 330EX at full throttle. Didn't anyone mention to all those people buying houses up on that hill that there was a legendary racetrack nearby that might get a bit noisy? We are getting ready for Winter Nationals in Pomona next month. I wonder if Top Fuel Dragsters will have to meet 92db limits. Not likely. Good luck with your sound deadening mods. I'll see you in the corkscrew.
