So, I have read about the eventual failure of the "brilliant" in-dash cup holder. Only I didn't expect mine to crunch as I opened it and the faceplate to fall off in my hand. -of course it also had to leave a little rubbed blemish on the dash too.

The interior mechanism works, with the occasional sticking. I can deal with that. The faceplate looks as if it just needs to be glued back in place. My dealer won't do it. They want me to buy the whole mechanism at $300+.

If I try to slide the faceplate (the tab into the slot) it is tight and might need a tap into place. But there is a dial type mechanism with teeth that needs to line up too. Which position does this dial start in? Does anyone have instructions? Its a 2003 boxster.

Help a girl out please?

Unfortunately, there is little in the manual , other then a very sketchy r+r of the assembly itself. I've attempted to rebuild/repair both Audi and Porsche units with little success. Ended up just purchasing a new unit and installing it. I did find a couple places(auto atlanta, etc.) selling used units for $200. You might see what some of the dealers(Hennesey, Suncoast, Sunset, etc.) are discounting them for down in the states. Sorry I could not be of more help. :)

When I removed my useless cupholders, I remember the face plate simply popping off with slight pressure. It isn't glued on; I believe there were nylon type plugs that held it in place ('02 S).

I lost the faceplate on mine too... I ended up using some super glue (Gorilla brand) and glued it on while extended. After a couple minutes holding it on and waiting for glue to dry, I pushed the holder back in and it has worked since. Mind you, I do not use the cupholders so it is purely cosmetic. This solution has worked best for me.
