hello guys

I am in the market right now for a 99-01 996 , would like the c4 but would also be more than happy with c2 , Cant help to notice high milage 996

60-120K miles everywhere going for bargian prices , I really can take my pick of color and options inthe 20-25K range, seems to be aton out there,

I was wondering if the porsche dealer or somewhere online can run the vin check to find maintinace records for the 996 , (not a carfax ) or i read something about a onboard computer tells info also,

Also not afraid of working / modding the 996 myself, exhaust, RMS , clutch, tune up etc.. worked on alot of older 911 and tons of mercedes,

Are there any manuals out yet also,

any info would be great

thanks

Board sponsor Sunset Imports (see the link at the top of this page, near the center) has a sale on 996 OBD II Manual (DME 5.2.2) for $27.00 (down from $895). That's a good place to start.

Also, pick up the December '08 issue of Porsche EXcellence magazine and read the Tech Forum article on the M96 engine. Very informative so that you learn about the characteristics and history of these engines before you buy your 996, rather than later.

Frequent oil changes seem to be a really good idea.

Hi,

If you want to read the DME, then you will need the Durametric reader. It will read the stage 1 and 2 ignition which will tell you if the car has been reved passed the limits (do a search). As for the manual from Sunset.....it's pretty useless for new car buyer. All it tells you is the meaning of the codes and possible problems.

Good luck

My advice would be to spend a bit more money and get a low mile 2002 or up with the 3.6. The high mileage 3.4's are cheap for a reason.......

Or even better get an early Turbo... At least it won't blow up and set you back $10 to 15K

The 3 VIN limit is for the enthusiast version. You cannot reset the tool to test more than 3 cars.

The professional version lets you test an unlimited number of cars, but costs more.

The support provided by "Duram", the owner of the company, is top notch.
