Make sure it is not the pan gasket - that one is easy enough to change.

If it is leaking from the two seals in the pic - then Porsche's answer is to "replace the transmission".

Problem is they don't (or won't) sell those gaskets. Folks have done some further investigation. The Tiptronic is made by Mercedes for Porsche but the Mercedes parts won't work because Porsche's casting is different.

Your best bet (if that is the leaking point) is to find a good transmission shop that can make the gaskets.

thank you, is it a known problem for the leak at the transfere case

I've just got my 996TT back from having the transmission leak fixed. It was just a small weep, but I hate anything like that.

First, as Loren suggested, I changed the oil pan seal, as that was where the fluid was collecting. Then I thought it was from the seals where the fluid pipes go in to the ATF cooler, but these were replaced without improving the situation. After changing them, it was obvious the engine and transmission had to come out, as the leak was higher up. I had hoped that it was from a seal on where an ATF pipe goes in to the top side of the main casing, but it wasn't that either.

It turned out to be the intermediate plate/gasket between the bell housing and the main casing (item 544 on the attached). The problem is that you have to separate the transfer casing to take the box apart, and the gaskets shown in the diagram Loren posted are not available, as he says. Fortunately the gaskets weren't damaged when it came apart, so they were re-used, but applied with Loctite 574 sealant before re-assembly.

The other areas they seem to leak from are the oil seal around the nose of the oil pump (item 70) and the oil seal on the output shaft of the transfer case (see Loren's diagram). Both seals are MB parts, and available from Porsche.

Glad it turned out well for you - as I said only a few folks have had the intermediate plate/gasket leak.

I'd like to add to this topic, since my 2003 996TT has just been diagnosed with the dreaded Tiptronic case gasket leak. My indie will inspect it more closely to determine precisely where the leak is coming from. I am hesitant to replace the entire transmission at significant cost as it has been performing flawlessly. I know there are a few other members on here who have had this leak. I conjecture that this leak is related to an earlier failed transmission mount where lateral stress places additional force against the case and gasket. Nobody has connected these two seemingly independent events yet, but reading the forums, it seems that a couple of members that had the failed case gasket mentioned a broken transmission mount. If that is the case, as our cars start to age, there will be more cars requiring a repair of this seal. I'd like to add to this knowledge base by detailing the exact parts and discussing the best methods of solving this problem.

As everyone knows, the seal numbered (1 and 2) in Loren's earlier post is not available from Porsche or Mercedes. The two most economical solutions mentioned by other posters have been to use a sealing compound in lieu of the old gasket or to make the seal by using the factory seal as a template. The tolerance gap between the case and the bell housing does seem to matter, so I believe that using the sealing compound method is not the best solution. I'm attaching a PDF from Victor Reinz, the OEM supplier to Porsche for gasket and sealing compounds:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/64918341/Anwendungsbereich_Dichtungsmaterial_%28E%29_Seite_9.pdf

Could someone with more technical knowledge than me look at the table on Page 13 and determine which model gasket is appropriate?

1) AFM 22 ; AFM 37/8; Reinzoloid FS53 or RGC 257 ?

2) What thickness should the gasket be (page 12) ?

Thanks in advance.
