Having just purchased a 2002 996 Turbo I was quite disappointed that it did not have a homelink garage opener setup in it. I researched the internet for awhile and saw that some people had integrated their garage door openers and made a switch with the targa top switch.

I didn't like that option very much as you were still using the old remote and if you needed two remotes it would start to get cumbersome.

I bought a Gentex mirror on ebay with the homelink option.

To get the old mirror off was a lot easier than I thought. I heated up a metal putty knife and slide it between the glass and the mirror. It came off pretty easy.

Next after taking apart the old mirror I used my volt meter to find a hot wire, it was already there from the old dimming mirror, it was brown and red on my car, I also picked a wire that was hot only when the key was on. I then grounded to a blue and black wire.

That was about it.

It took about an hour and now I have homelink opener for my gate and garage.

Sorry I didn't take any pictures.

Did it have an option for the self dimming mirror with homelink?? Mine is not working anymore and is constantly dark, though I love the dimming feature on my other cars!!!

Wife's X5 has factory Homelink mirror wired for ignition on only. I hate having to start it in the garage to run the door down (or vice versa on entry). So I use the wall switch.

I wired my concealed remote for always hot to a Targa top switch. And hardwired the radar detector for ignition on so I do not have to manually turn it on and off.

I bought also per your recommendation.

How does this mirror attach to the 996 turbo. Did you need another adapter?

It states on their auction some cars might need other adapters

Does the 996 turbo need these?

**This is a Universal Kit. It can be installed in any vehicle. If your vehicle uses the windshield mounted Wedge style mirror mounting tab like most cars do, you can simply remove your current mirror and put this one on your existing mounting tab. If your current mirror uses a different mount or mounts to the roof, you need to request a free Wedge Windshield bracket to install this mirror to your windshield.

Please note that some vehicles may require an adapter to mount this mirror to your cars existing Windshield Mount. Newer Hondas and some other vehicles use a Cam-Lock Mount that requires an adapter. A Cam-Lock Adapter is available for an additional charge.

I used the wedge kit that they provided.

Went on no problem.

No problem. I'll try to post some up tonight!

I am putting in a new stereo so hopefully I have time!

Do you think you could post some opics with the mirror installed? Curious how it looks. Thanks

Actually....the newer garage door openers are being made with micro circuitry so small that they just attach to your key chain and eliminate the need to try to wire in switches....but of course that doesn't cut it with some of the afficianados and/or purists who want a dedicated switch on the dash.

Can you tell me if this will interfere with the rain sensor? Thanks

:welcome:

Your rain sensor is a separate wire and mounting disk - a different mirror should not affect it.

Great post! This seems like the easiest option, as far as having a fixed garage door openner.

Couple questions:

1 - Does the wedge kit they provided come with the epoxy needed to attach the wedge to the windsheild?

2 - How critical is the placement of the wedge? Did you measure or just put it approximately where the one you removed was?

3 - How hot did you need to get the putty knife? Blow torch for a few seconds or more like red hot?

Thanks!

Oh, I have the OEM dimming mirror in perfect working order if anybody wants it.

Hi Is your self dimming mirror still available. I am looking to add bothinterior & exterior self dimming mirrors to my 04 targa. Thanks
