I am wondering what OBD II tool people are using to read codes and reset? PST2 seems increadibly expensive. Will off the shelf scanners do the same job?

Durametric is all you need for codes, system values and resetting many systems. There is tons of info here, a good website and the developer (Duram) answers questions quickly and updates and improves based on suggestions and requests!

Cannot say enough...there is no other solution unless you have big money for a pst2 or know Loren personally!

+1 for the Durametric and for the support readily given by Duram, the owner.

It is a very useful diagnostic tool, with the capability of measuring certain engine parameters and functions. It's miles ahead of an ordinary scanner/reader and will pay for itself the first time you use it.

Regards, Maurice.

Is the Durametric better than the AutoEnginuity's ScanTool? I'm also looking to buy but wasn't sure which one is better (I have a 1999 996 C2).

I don't know that one nor have I seen it mentioned here but looking the features it just appears to be a laptop based obd2 scanner (although advanced) with some real time driving logging options. This may be useful for other cars in the fleet as the durametric is only for porche's but again...you'll get "real time" values of system such as HVAC, sensor values, and real time graphing of those functions.

If you want one just for your Porsche I am sure Durametric is the right choice. Not sure how car savvy you are but reading both websites should point out the obviously solution for your needs.

See the side by side comparison of capabilities between a generic OBD II tool and the Durametric software (on their site).

I looked through the websites and I think they are close. Except the AutoEnginuity doesn't seem to have vehicle limits, can be used with different makes and models, and they also have a Porsche enhancement option to the program that adds other functions such as clearing the AirBag light, etc. Enhanced interface for Porsche, like the Durametric. I do like the Durametric's gui better.

What do you guys think?

How deep do you want to go?

A simple pocket scanner will read and clear 80-90% of the codes you are likely to see. The Durametric gives much more in depth diagnostic info for more serious shade tree mechanics and tuners. The PST2 will give you virtually everything a certified Porsche mechanic will get. As with any tool I get the one I will most likely use regularly and when things go over my head I find someone smarter than me with the tools to get the job done.

Durametric also clears airbag lights.
