So, I've bought some parts from the guy in Belgium in order to make the replacement before I have a problem on my 2002 S. But the problem I'm having is getting the old, red parts off. Any ideas? Seems to me I've seen advice on this on the board before but I can't find it now.

Put the clamshell in the rearmost position, then, after the top opens slightly, press the button in the "close top" direction for a split second.

That will take the tension off the plastic ball cup and make it easier to remove.

If you can't remove the plastic ball cup by putting one arm and hand in there, approaching from the rear, then use a 12" to 15" screwdriver-type crowbar from the rear as well. Use the angled part of the blade to lever off the ball cup by placing the tip of the blade just behind the steel ball, under the ball cup.

If you have trouble doing it from that direction. Go around to the side of the car and look down under the B-pillar black knuckle, and you should be able to see the red plastic ball cup through the small space. A longer screwdriver-type crowbar works best from that approach. Just be careful not to scratch the paint with the rear surface of the screwdriver-type crowbar blade.

There is also the approach of unscrewing the 10mm bolt with thick washer that is about halfway along the pushrod that leads to the plastic ball cup. Once you get it apart, it is easier to grab the (now detached) front part of the pushrod and exert pressure from a steeper angle than when it is still attached. If you use this method, be VERY SURE to first mark the spot where the two parts of the pushrod are bolted together so that you can duplicate the exact overall length of the pushrod.
