I need to replace the horn on the above car, which has stopped working. I understand there are two horns on the 996 and wondered if anyone has experience of replacement and whether it is a relatively straightforward DIY job. Porsche main stealer is happy to do the work but has quoted around £300 fitted. Any guidance very much welcomed and appreciated. Are each of the two horns identical? I guess one may be high tone and one low tone??

Many thanks - and best wishes from London, GB

Thank you very much indeed for the quick reply Loren. Most helpful. I understand that there is a low tone and a high tone horn, so will need to determine which I need to buy!

Best wishes!

Here is a picture of the horns. My finger is on the second horn and if I remember correctly it is the low pitch. The other horn that is in front is the one that usually go out. My theory is because it is not protected from water like the rear horn is.

If you look under your bumper cover there is an opening through which you can see and touch the front horn. Have someone beep them with your fingers on the horn and see if it is that one.

The was the same problem the Chrysler 300M had when it first came out. The first water puddle you drove though kill your horns. It took 3 months for a replacement. The replacement was a bracket the pointed the horns backwards. True duct tape technology. I should have known right then (first 30 days of ownership) that car was a piece.

Or... replace them with a single air horn (like many of us have).

Did you need to run a relay for the higher current draw of the more powerful horn? Or did the supply of one side of the original horns have enough juice?

The existing relay is fine and it is already fused too.

If both horns have stopped working, then your problem may lie elsewhere. For my 996, it was a previous owner who didn't hook up the lead to the horn in the steering wheel correctly. Still, if you need to get to the horns, you do need to remove the front bumper. I just published an article on this here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/68-BODY-Front_Bumper_-_Wheel_Liner/68-BODY-Front_Bumper_-_Wheel_Liner.htm

Hope this helps,

Wayne
