I have a 1999 Porsche Carrrera 4 Convertible 60500 miles.

It makes a squeeling sound occasionally at cold start. I have changed my three pulleys recently, so they are ok.

Could that be the water pump? How often is it recommended to change them?

Thanks

Kristian

If the noise only lasts a minute or two on cold engine startup and then disappears, it is most likely the secondary air pump.

It last only about two seconds

I had a similar noise--turned out to be the starter going bad

Thanks, that might be it. Let's see if if starts giving me any other trouble with the starter.

Is there any way I can test the starter? I could not find an DIY for replacing the starter either.

If it is a horrible "shrieking" sound than it is your starter. Does it do it every time or intermittant? Mine got more frequent as time went by. Better make sure because it can cause damage if not replaced.

Yeah, it could be the smog / air pump. Especially if it is cold. Sometimes it sounds like either a big vacuum pump or like a table saw / high pitched whine of a jet engine.

Do you hear this sound after driving the car around for half an hour, turn it off, and then turning it back on?

It's the horrible shrieking sound for a second or two at start-up when cold. I have to check the starter first and see

if that is the problem.

Thanks guys for your help

Hi...any luck in finding out if your problem was caused by your starter?

Def not that. The smog/air pump does not squeal in any way shape or form or sound or pitch.

Hi guys,

It was the starter. No whining any more. Got a good deal on it too at Advanced Auto Parts with a $111 core return fee.

Not to rain on your party, but the squealing is a result of the grease in the rear bearing cap drying out. If you remove a couple of screws, you can regrease, replace and all is well again.

Here's a picture of the starter.

The rear cap is where the number 27 is pointing.

any particular kind of grease that should be used? a white lithium, regular old axle grease?

Thanks!

Funny, I had that same awful sound. I took out the starter and cleaned and lubed the shaft at the opposite end of the one you indicate and the problem has been gone ever since (about 3 weeks now).

I cleaned the part with WD-40 and lubed it with standard high-temp synthetic axle grease. To get at the shaft I had to pull and twist the gear.
