1999 996 C2

Started my car up today and the idle went to 2000 RPM and stayed there. The it started surging from 1000 rpm to 1500. It just surges over and over.

I drove it thinking it might clear it up. It didn't...It has done this once before a few weeks ago and driving it at high revs made it run normally again.

I went back home and cleaned the MAF and tried it again..Same problem.

I disconnected the MAF and the surging stopped. re connected it and the surge started again. I don't have a code reader so I don't know what the fault codes could be.

Could it be the MAF? I have never replaced it. Have had the car for over 3 years and I drive it almost everyday.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Phillipj

Since you have no diagnostic tool to check the codes and values, i would start with cleaning the throttle body and idle valve, despite the fact that the MAF running strange reactions. If the cleaning have no solution, than replace the MAF or let check in a dealership.

Anyone know where the best place is to buy a MAF for my 99 996 C2?

Thanks

For the price of a new MAF you can get a good scanning tool which all new car owners should have. Using the tool will tell you if your MAF is bad or not rather than acting like a typical Porsche Technician and replacing parts until you find the problem.

Luckily RFM told me to clean the throttle body and the idle valve. The idle valve was packed with carbon. I cleaned everything out and now it idles perfectly!!!

I'm so pleased that I was able to fix it myself. No MAF for me and I learned something.

I will get the scanner though. That is something I definetly need to add to the tool box.

Thanks for the input
