I have a 2000 Boxster w/2.7 and 5-speed that I have had for about 3 weeks. It has 135,000 on it. The cruise control did not work when I purchased it (no light in instrument cluster, no function), nor did the central locking switch on the dash. The interior door light on the driver side did not work as well.

Last weekend I popped open the lens on the door light, and removed the (explosively) failed lamp. I also pulled the cover on the fuse box, and did a check on fuses to make sure that they were'nt the culprit with the cruise or locking issues (althought I'd already seen the taillight/cruise control topics on the forum, and they worked fine. Likewise with the clutch switches clicking twice), and found nothing but a couple that seated a little bit more when pressed gently. No change.

This morning (Thursday) I go out to go to work, turn the key on, and the cruise light comes on! Shortly afterward, I noticed that the door lock switch on the dash was working now as well. I'm glad that they work now, but...... that seems a little spooky to me.

I'm wondering what possible relationships there are between the two systems that were'nt functioning, and as well if the door light is related to either (but 4 days later?). I'm hoping that it might help me figure out where to go to solve the problem permanently.

A little additional information: I'm on the central coast in California and we had some heavy drizzle bordering on rain for the first time on Tuesday. On Wednesday I drove to Oakland with a co-worker, and about half way he said he thought he smelled hot electrics just briefly (could have been other trucks/traffic around us). I work with electronics equipment, so I know the smells and I'm pretty sensitive to them. I didn't smell anything, and haven't before or after (except leather), but thought it deserved a mention. I don't recall any instances where a stench ever produced something functional, but?

Not sure if it had anything to do with the gremlins you experienced, but one of the first things I would do would be to insure that the Boxster's drains are all clear.

The central alarm control box under the driver's seat can get flooded and result in a very expensive repair.

Thanks, Maurice. I saw that post, too. Looks like I have someplace to start. Hope I don't manage to hose it again in the process! I'll post an update on my situation, one way or another. Thanks again!

I got the seat out, and no sign of any moisture ever having been there. Quite clean. No sign of any fusing either, or mention of one in the maintenance manual that I could find. Think you could narrow down the location? I didn't try to remove the module itself. Thanks.

I thought I would follow up on how my problem ended up, and maybe it will help someone else. I continued to have other issues, with check engine lights coming on as well. My mechanic checked the codes, and they were only pre-cat sensors and such waiting to time-out. Eventually, my cruise control stopped working again, and I had him look at it when I took it in for service last month. The bulb had burned out in the dash.

After replacing the bulb, and everything working fine again, we discussed the possible causes. The obvious places to start looking would be things that had been added, which are only the top with glass rear window/defroster and the satellite radio. We decided that it would be a good plan to not use the rear defroster for a while and see what kind of results I had (since they create all of that glorious heat through the use of a dead short). Low and behold, I have not had any check engine lights or other issues since. I get to spend my money on other stuff now! Like a new top!

Beware the rear defroster!
