I imported a US model 02 Carrera 4 to Canada recently, according to the Canadian laws, the car has to be re-wired for day time running head light and it was done by the US seller. But I believe the re-wiring was done incorrectly...

when the engine is running, the xeron headlight is on automatically, but not the day time running light and the dash board, but those lights can be turned on by the light switch...I also own an Audi TT, so I think when the engine is running, the day time running light and dash board should be on, then the xeron headlight should be on only when the light switch is turn on. Does anyone know how excatly the lights for the Canadian model should work? If there is a wiring problem, is it possible to fix it myself with simple tools? Any pictures with instrustion available on-line?

Here is Porsche's write up of how it works:

(probably more than you want to know)

"Daytime lights, Canada (country-specific equipment)

The daytime lights comprise parking lights, side lights, registration plate lights, and the low-beam lights.

1. Functioning with light switch off

- Up to "ignition on" ignition key position:

Daytime lights not functioning.

- Engine started:

Daytime lights are activated via engine-running signal. If the engine stalls, the daytime lights remain lit.

- Engine is switched off, ignition key at "0" position:

Low-beam light is switched off, the parking lights and registration plate lights remain switched on. If the ignition is switched on from this position, the low-beam light is switched on again.

- Ignition key is removed:

Daytime light is completely switched off.

- High-beam light cannot be activated in the above mentioned cases - except headlight flasher.

- Instrument illumination does not function.

2. Functioning with light switch at position 1

- Parking and registration plate lights light up irrespective of daytime lights.

- Low-beam lights are also switched on when engine is started.

- High-beam lights cannot be activated - except headlight flasher.

- Instrument illumination functions.

3. Functioning with light switch at position 2

- Parking and registration plate lights light up irrespective of daytime lights.

- If ignition is switched on, high-beam or low-beam lights are also activated depending on the position of the high/low beam light switch.

- Instrument illumination functions.

General

If the "daytime lights" control unit is disconnected and the light switch is switched on, apart from the daytime lights the registration plate lights as well as the circuit for additional low-beam lights with high-beam lights are also inoperative."

Dear Loren,

Thank you for the detail informtion, so it seems like the lights are re-wired in-correctly, so should I take the car back to the dealer to have it fixed? How difficult it is to do it myself? Once again, thank you.

The proper way is to add the two special DRT relays. I am not sure if anything else needs to be done.

If you bought it from a dealer I would think that they have an "obligation" to fix it for free - since DRT are required in Canada.

Another option for you would be to do that DRT "hack". Here is a link:

If the vehicle is already wired for DRL then you just have to install the relay, you can also purchase a universal DRL module at any local auto parts store and have that installed.
