Black 996 Cab got Keyed

My 1999 996 Black Cab got keyed over the weekend. I will need to get it re-painted. Other than trying to find a great paint shop are there any other things I need to consider? Is there anything I need to ask the paint shop to make sure they do the job correctly.

The only good news is that black is very easy to match but make sure you go to an excellent body shop.

Also, depending on how bad it was keyed, it may be possible to have it touched up / buffed out.

I have a black 03 MB that was scratched (about twelve inches) by a pipe on the highway (looked exactly like it was keyed). Rather than repainting, I had it filled in and touched up. Not perfect but to me better than repainting.

My scratch is from the front all the way to the back. On both sides. Really terrible. The whole car has to be re-painted. Oh well. Is there a Black color that will be even Blacker than the original? Should I get additional clear coats? What should I do to make the car very nice now since I only want to do this paint job once. Thanks

The main thing is to get a really good and recommended body shop.

They will know what to do best.

I don't think there is any corners to cut in that respect.

How to avoid scratches from other cars when parked :D

I agree with that parking method however, it is just that type of parking that tends to p*i*s*s people off. I just try to park very far away from any entrance so there are no cars around. Just got unlucky this time though.

how do they touch up a 12 inch stratch?

Cleaned it (very fine rubbing compound), primer (only in the scratch, wipe away excess), then touch up paint (wipe away the excess so that it is ONLY in the scratch). This built it up to basically the same level as the factory paint.

Before ( 0 out of 10)

With Touch up (7.5 out of 10) from a foot away AND not noticeable from 5 feet

Like I said, it does not look 'perfect' but on my black MB fender, it is barely noticeable but even with a total repaint of the fender, I would not have considered it a 10 / 10.

my 99 996 was keyed while I spent 5 minutes inside the grocery store...I called the ins company and had an estimate done. During the estimate, there was noticeable sandblast damage to the whole car and the estimator ended up claiming the entire car for a repaint...problem is that the estimate came out to only $3200.

From what I have read everywhere, the min cost for a black 911 paint job that is decent would be $5000.

Now I am going through tthe painstaking process of finding a decent paint shop here in El Paso, TX. I had some work done at a shop in Tucson last time, but they didn't put the panels together right (one headlight misaligned), and it took forever (just the front bumper was done).

I am so nervous about getting the car painted that I really don't know what to do now...other than hand the car over to a shop and hope that they file a supplemental estimate to cover cost, and pray that the shop actually does a good job.

Anybody here know what brand Porsche paint is? PPG? DuPont?

I would check with the loal PCNA chapter and see who they would recommend. That's what I did when my 964 was attcacked by a rain gutter downspout (WHY didn't i MOVE the **** car :cursing: ) I found the local porsche specialist shop and it goes in on monday. One thing is for sure, they are expensive to have painted correctly.

My son dropped a part on mine over Christmas Break....... small dent, we were able to have it PDR'ed. A little polish and we came out lucky. My son was nervous to say the least.

By the way I like the parking job PViby... I normally park way out and hike in.

my 2c do not try to save that extra penny when selecting garage for paintjob, make sure its reputable and they do it well...

i recently learnt the hard way, redid the whole car in 06 spec black. it was COMPLETE NIGHTMARE.

3 weeks after i got the carback, i split the front lower spoiler and also received a 6" SUPER DEEP scratch...

and now planning to i have to redo it all over again (or at least respray 4-5 panels)...

Body shop wants to order new door panel, paint and 'blend' paint into front and rear fenders as they say it is impossible to match the color exactly.

My thought was to try to source a used door from a dismantler. My paint code (under the hood) is L92U - Arctic Silver. The code from under the carpet by left light assembly reads:

92U 8 Q

Arctic Silver

X1

Questions is, aside from the L92U are any of the other numbers & letters related to the paint color and what is the possibility of another used door in arctic silver actually matching my paint? as the car is 12 years old I'm sure the new clearcoat will have a much more shine to it than the rest of the car...

Your best bet would be to get a door from a wrecker, albeit the paint may not exactly match. The correct procedure would be to blend the front fender and quarter panel, then clearcoat the fender, door and quarter panel. This will ensure an almost perferect match to the eye.You are talking thousands of dollars if you get a new door, and blend the paint. I am guessing $3-5K.

I have painted many arctic silver Porsche panels, and it is a difficult paint to match. I suggest using PPG water base coat, and PPG Omni clearcoat urethane with hardner. L92U is water based, and L92T is solvent base.

You might get lucky with a used replacement door. I often see arctic silver doors on eBay for $330-$500. You could try dC Automotive http://dcauto.gotdns.com/?p=2, as they have one of the largest Porsche wrecking yards in the world.

Thanks for your comments mffarrell. Cost is not as much of a concern (covered by insurance) as having one side of the car look different than the other as I have heard arctic silver is tough to match. I have not heard how much the factory paint differs from car to car though. I have purchased parts from DC Auto in the past and found them helpful.

A quality shop will be able to perfectly match the rest of the car. I have painted many Porsches, and it pretty straight forward to match the paint. Just find a reputable shop.
