Help please, ...Hi I am a newbie with a 2004 Boxster S Special Edition. Car has been checked bumper to bumper by Porsche a couple of months ago. All systems good, after driving all summer headache free the car didn't start the other day with no warning whatsoever. Thinking it is the battery that it is 4 years old. I get it tested. Battery tests good, nevertheless I connect a CTEK US3300 battery charger/maintainer. Day later the car starts and I drive it on highway after about 1hour the first warning icomes on the display "Battery/generator/alternator" next warning "PCM shutting down" followed by the falling "ABS brakes", "airbag warning", "brake distribution" the dashboard was lighting up like an xmas tree. AC temp control clicking followed by the whole car shutting down leaving me on the side of the highway. Forgot to mention a big puff of blue smoke after starting car earlier. My take on this is a faulty alternator not providing the right voltage to the OBC. Has anyone been thru this any words of wisdom?? Thx!

thx juniinc, would that explain the big puff of blue smoke after resatring the car and is the alternator the same as in the reg 2004BoxsterS. Keep in mind that some things are slightly different in the 2004 Boxster Special Edition ex: the air filter and airfilter housing are the same as the 2005 BoxsterS.

A blue pump of smoke is common for flat this engine from time to time. Many will state they get it after the car sitting for some time but I have found no rhyme or reason for my puffs from time to time.

Most likely unrelated to your alternator issues.

covered in his 2nd paragraph:

"A quick puff of smoke occasionally on startup is not at all unusual nor is it a sign of the AOS failing as long as it is only at startup. It is a characteristic of the flat-six engine and the way oil sometimes drains. You should check inside the AOS tubing where it goes into the air intake for heavy oil in the tube before removing/replacing the AOS. A light coating in that tube is normal. "

yup, alternator. been there, done that. lots of posts and threads here with identical symptoms. welcome... we've got the alternator t-shirts....

And what a frustrating t-shirt it was to get for me! :eek: Just went through that painful process and got my car back this morning.

Nexus, please read Mike's advice on alternator repair...I wish I did before replacing mine.

:thankyou: I had the voltage regulator replaced from a friend who owns an impressive alternator/starter rebuild shop. Visually the Bosch looked in stellar condition. With the new voltage reg it passed the bench test with flying colors. Hopefully it will have put that issue to sleep! Thx to all for input!

Glad to hear it was only the VR. Did the alternator come out to figure this out or is the VR external on the alternator?

no i had the whole alternator out as I was not too sure where I was going with this. IT was the external VR.

I'm curious what your voltage read on the battery while the car was running. (prior to swapping the alternator out)

I didn't have a meter with me at the time so I can't be of any help! Truth be told I bought one yesterday at the local Can Tire shop and it is in the rear boot as we speak.

No worries man. I was curious as to what the alt was pumping to the battery. If it was in the high 14.XX volts

CT has a decent digital one that goes on sale from time to time.
