iPod integration... testing waters

I was recently searching for a way to connect my iPod directly to the stereo in my '02 911 and I remembered a contact I've got in China.

I called him up and I can put in an order to have several units made but I wanted to make sure there's a need for them here first.

Basically it'd be a combination of an Aux-input (for at least 96-02), a noise filter (to eliminate alternator whine) and a power connection on one end (all hidden behind the dash) with a normal looking iPod connection on the other end.

So what you'd get is a device that both charges your ipod and plays music directly through the auxiliary input of your head unit.

The installation would be simple and I would be able to include everything that you'd need to install it, including radio keys and detailed instructions.

Installation would not require any cutting/modification of your vehicle or it's wiring harnesses.

Right now the price is looking to be around $60

Would many of you guys be interested?

If I can get some interest I'll go ahead and have the first batch ordered and shipped over so I can supply you guys with pictures.

Sounds interesting. Although I don't use an iPod, I fitted an aux input to my 99 996 for my Palm Treo. The noise filter is interesting, since I do experience some of that. I also get very loud GSM transmission noise, something I never noticed with this same phone in my '04 MINI Cooper S (also using an aux input).

Great idea to have another source for a iPod connectivity. You might want to mention to your China ODM that the iPhone and 2nd gen iTouch connector interface is different from earlier iPods. This is mainly for the power connection. Older iPod connection kits don't support power on the iTouch or iPhone.

Do you guys notice especially high sensitivity to GSM noise (blackberry buzz, etc) with the Becker units? I notice a lot more than I did in my MINI Cooper S. Is there anything I can do to shield it from these signals?

GSM noise is a fact of life. It will even show up on land line phones.

I like the GSM Buzz because I can hear it on the radio when I have to top down, and that alerts me to an incoming call.

Ha, you try living with GSM buzz due to corporate email on a Treo. :) Every few minutes theres a new email coming in... With my MINI, I had to have the phone very close to the stereo head unit to be affected by it, but in the Porsche the phone just has to be in the car and it'll interfere. I was wondering if foil or something could be used to help shield it.

From looking at the photos I did the following:

1. Aux cable from hong kong on ebay £5 (search becker aux cable)

2. Ground loop isolator from Maplin £8 (optional)

3. RCA to ipod cable amazon £3.

4. Becker Radio keys

It works a treat and takes 5 to 10 minutes to install.

That's correct. I don't know about you but I've got a lot more than 6 CDs on my iPod... :P
