986 Central Locking / Alarm Issues

Hello all,

I have been searching for some help with issues on my 97 boxster, and not had any luck:

I have two issues with the alarm/central locking:

1) the doors will only lock every fifth or sixth times when using the key remotes... not an absolute #, it is very inconsistent.

when it does NOT lock, you hear the locks click twice... perhaps once trying to lock, and a second time unlocking. then you hear a relay click after.

Since there is only one button on the remote to lock and unlock the doors, I am guessing there must be a sensor in the door locks that will tell the alarm control unit if the doors are in the locked or unlocked position. Is this the case? If true, can you replace just that sensor, or is the switch integrated to the door handle or lock mechanism?

2) Issue two relates to the relay click... when the alarm has a fault, I've read that it should honk the horn to indicate it. I am guessing the relay click is for the horn, but the horn does not sound. I have confirmed this on one of the rare occasions that the doors stay locked, and tried to set off the alarm. I hear relay clicking, but no horn.

FYI, the horn works fine by normal means of pushing the steering wheel center.

I have heard reference to alarm codes, I have a scangauge that will read OBDII codes, will it also read these alarm codes I have heard of?

Most OBD II code readers do not read Porsche specific alarm fault codes. You would need the Durametric Software, a PST2 or PIWIS tester to read alarm fault codes.

What country are you in? Alarm controls are slightly different for some countries.

The alarm siren/horn is mounted next to the battery (under front hood). You can always test it out of the car with a 12 volt source.

need to replace the whole latch mechanism, unless U can rigg it at home

I would put one of those Porsche testers on it - it will tell you exactly where the problem is.
