So I have had my '06 997 S for about 4 months now and have done mostly short drives here and there not spending too much time doing highway driving. I always noticed that there was some road noise when transitioning from asphalt to concrete (grooved) stretches of highway and when going over speed bumps and uneven road, but did not pay too much attention to it. I recently did an hour of highway driving and could barely stand the cabin road noise. It seemed to be much worse on the concrete stretches and over expansion joints. I also noticed that more of the noise came from the rear tires rather than the front. I have also noticed more noise coming from the rear when going over speed bumps or rough road. I have brand new PS2's, but did notice the noise with the Pirelli's I had previously. Is this normal? I was told it could be bad wheel bearing, but the car has 14,5k miles so I question this being the cause. Any insight would be appreciated.

I had a similar situation in my 996. The road noise was so loud that I thought I had a bad bearing. But then I switched to a different set of tires and that made all the difference in the world!

Am surprised that the PS2's are louder. Had a set of Yokohama AVS 100's on my '01 Boxster and as they wore they become louder to the point that it sounded like I was driving a truck. The PS2's on my '07 C4S are much more quiet despite being much wider and lower profile. I suspect that the tread design on the AVS' had a lot to do with the sound and while not certain, believe the angled tread pattern has something to do with it.

Are the tires original? I also experienced an increase in cabin noise as the tires reached 10 k miles wspecially if you have a lot of neg camber.

I have N spec PS2's with about 500 miles on them. Just as loud as my worn Pirelli's. Go figure.

Tire pressure is correct front and rear?

Unless my gauge is incorrect. I am running 37 front 42 rear. I am going to double check with another gauge though just to be sure.

These cars are loud especially on cement.

That being said I found The P-zero to very loud as they wore out. The Ps2s seem to be going the same way, although when new, they were quiet.

Another issue may be alignment. My wifes S4 became out of alignment in the front, just about wearing out the inside of the tires.

Had it aligned and it became much quieter with the same tires.

I am seriously thinking of adding some Dynamat to the back if mine. Has anyone else done this?

Yes, unfortunately it takes substances with higher mass to block low frequency noise, which is primarily the problem with tires.

I adjusted my tires (cold) with my digital tire gauge last weekend to the recommended 37 and 44 psi. I found the TPMS was reading about 2-4 psi lower than my measured pressures.

Are the tires properly balanced or maybe out of round?

Tires were just recently balanced and are new. I would hope they would not be out of round, but I would think that I would feel a vibration if they were.

Those numbers are for full load. Meaning several passengers and trunk full. For standard load, it is 33 / 39. I just looked at the Porsche TSBs related to tire pressure available on this website. Same pressures for C2 and C4, S and non-S.

I believe if you look closely, the door jam says Full Load. The manual says something different.

I haven't checked the sticker to see if it says those numbers are for full load or not, but I have searched the forums and it seems as if there is a lot of variance in the pressures people run.

Alot of variance in track pressures, but I haven't seen many people deviate from 33/39 on the highway. My C2S came from factory with your pressures and it was very hard. Once I set it to what the manual said, very different car.

I had a set of PS2 before. It had 20k miles on them. They were so loud I suspected it was a wheel bearing problem.

I replaced them with Bridgestone 050 pole position. The 95% of the noise are gone. I guess it is just the laws of physics, tires that wide are bounded to have tire noises like that.

Well, that makes our Porsche even more special then. :D

In addition to road noise caused by the surface or tires I experienced a resonance at highway speeds in 6th gear that I found more irritating than the normal road noise. I found changing the headers made this noise go away. First the e-bay headers than the AWE headers. Both did the job.

Good to know. I have been aware of the resonance from the exhaust. That along with the cabin noise / road noise as well as the bass from the Bose add up to plethora of noise :D
