Soft Top - need link

Hi,

I seen a thread about taking off the soft top so one can take it to the upholstery shop to get plastic rear window replaced but i can't find it anywhere.. been looking for it for an hour now...

If you get the top off the frame to take it somewhere you may as well buy another top online (ebay) for $600 and put it back on. This of course assumes you have the money.

Since you seem to be a DIY'r I would suggest you take the top and frame off together. You can flip it over like a turtle on his back and easily fix hardware or hand sew (with patience) so in a new plastic window. Removing the top frame from the car takes approx. 45 minutes for a newbie and involved about 4 blots, two top cables on the bal joints. It's covered in the Porsche tech manual very poorly, you can figure it mostly out on your own very easily.

I depends where you live. I have a buddy in LA at Torrance upholstery who does it. Talked to several shops that do it to out here to.

One way to gage if you want a completely new top is use this rule of thumb. A top will live about twice as long as a window. So if you top has the original window, if the price is right, go for a window.

FYI, I was low on funds last summer and needed a window. I tried stitching...no dice. For the 'elluva it I glued a window in with a 3m adhesive. I no real expectations but a year later its just fine. A little tricky and takes some time ( I tried 4 different glues and 2 window ($27 a pop) till I got it right.

I'm going to live with it till it quits, then take stock in the whole thing

what i ended up doing is took the frame down and then took the soft top off that frame... what an experience... freaking pain in da arse and i am very curious how i'm gonna put it back on... hehe... looks very scary.. tons of glue and doubleside tape... BTW, any of you know where to get that thin double tape? or will just regular double tape from 3M work? (they r about 3 times thicker than what was in there)...

You can use the 3M double sided adhesive tape referenced in that link as well. It works well if you clean the surfaces thoroughly and the additional thickness of the tape is negligible.

oooo... thats exactly what i was looking for.. Thanks a lot Maurice....

however, i managed to break both clamping rail .. lucky me... eh? anyway, any idea what the cost of those is? and where to get them?
