hi. have the same problem as everyone else. one side red ball snapping !98 boxster old style cable... you know the rest. but have leveled the clam shell out fitted the new end. but i still get a overun on putting the soft top up to close it ! getting the dreaded clunk as the gear comes off the last tooth and the shocker pulls it back. but for the life of me i cant understand how to sync the top to stop doing it. even tried the trick of putting a bit of foam on the rear clamshell to hit the switch on the roof motor early but still no joy !! any help please

Getting the "convertible top open" idiot light to go out (and thereby having it shut off power to the convertible top is very tricky if your top has gone out of its original synchronization. The "completely closed" position has proven more difficult for me than the "completely open" position.

In the "completely open" position, if you try different thicknesses of foam on the underneath of the clamshell, you should have some success. Try increasing the thickness of the foam piece incrementally, starting with 1/4 inch thickness, then 1/2 inch, then 3/4 of an inch.

To get the light to go out in the "completely open" position, see if you can experiment with the positioning of the small (silver) metal arm on the microswitch beneath the B-Pillar (under the carpeted semi-circular tubular plastic trim piece behind your left shoulder if you are sitting in the left seat (driver's seat in U.S., passenger seat in U.K.). You can first try to put small spacers on the part of the big black metal frame that the microswitch contacts before bending that lever arm permanently to see if you get any results.

When the top is working correctly, the half-moon gear on the "Version A" (early Boxsters, 1987 to 1989) transmissions is only one tooth away from jumping off the end of its travel, which is why you don't have much to play with. If you want to, you can rotate those gears (an equal amount) back with a cordless drill by operating the cables after you disconnect them from the electric motor.
