Hi,

I was curious is my engine had been replaced by the previous owner or not. So I was trying to find my engine serial number. I think I found where it should be, but there is nothing there.

Is the serial number imprited on the engine or is a stick on plate?

Here's a picture of where I think it should be:

Also, does anyone know what the empty holes are for?

Here it is on my 1997. I had to clean the plate off to see it. Car was on a lift so that helps when taking a picture and the flash was on.

I guess the bolt hole is for when the engine case is used for mounting something on the "backwards" engine 996.

Once you find the number, how do you figure out if it the original. Where would you find the SN that came with the car? and where exactly is that number located?

It is next to the oil pan on the right side.

Next time you are at the dealer bring your VIN and have the parts guy put it in the computer and give you the print out for your car. It will have the engine and transmission serial numbers and other info.
