Hey there,

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to purchase Michelins or Yokohamas for the 996 without getting totally robbed?

I am in the Toronto, Ontario (Canada) area and would prefer local (for installation reasons) but will go online if someone has a super secret spot for the deals!

Let's us know what you think about your new set of tires. I just had my tires replaced for my C2 with a set of Potenze 050 pole position. So far so good, excellent traction.

I got them from tirerack.

I talked to a couple of friends and they all say go see this guy in town for the best price (we'll see)

I'm going to get a price from tirerack and see if he'll match it - I'm looking for a set of Michelins to put on though

(I'm thinking Pilot Sports)

I have a track day coming up in a couple of weeks so I wanted to have some fresh rubber to beat up!

I'm sure that you know, but just in case, you are going to need to put ~500 or so miles and several heat cycles through a new set of street tires to achieve maximum traction. Brand new tires tend to be a little "slick."

I just got all new tires. PS2's. In about 200 miles, they were very grippy.

I threw out 500 miles, but it could be less depending on your driving style and the number of heat cycles you put them through. Point is brand new tires (street tires) do not have max grip. It takes time for the rubber in the tire to condition and it takes time for the tires to "adjust" to the alignment of the car for max performance.

Okay,

So I went to the local guy and his prices do seem pretty good - I ordered Bridgestone 050 Pole Positions and he went with $1400.00 (Canadian) installed, and everything - taxes in.

I thought that was fair - all things considered.....

I think the Pirelli:

1) Will wear faster

2) Not as good in the rain/wet

3) Get louder with wear

4) Tend to flat spot

Do a search on tires here and you will find more opinions about every tire that will fit these cars than you ever wanted to read! I'm personally a fan of Michelin Pilot Sports. I think in terms of wet/dry traction, noise, wear and other key factors, these tires are as good as any.

Do a search on tires here and you will find more opinions about every tire that will fit these cars than you ever wanted to read! I'm personally a fan of Michelin Pilot Sports. I think in terms of wet/dry traction, noise, wear and other key factors, these tires are as good as any.

Go to the tire rack and look at the survey and test results. I just purchased a set of Bridgestone 960A pole positions. For the money they were among the top picks. BTW they have a 40K mile wear out guarantee, and have excellent performance marks. They are really quiet, and ride suburb and handle exceptionally well in the rain for a performance tire. You will not regret it.

My opinion on Michelins, they are way over priced and you can do better. You are paying for the name.

Pirrelli's had them and did not like them, they wear out pretty darn fast, are very noisy and get noisier s they wear, the performance is nothing to brag about.

I think Bridgestone is opening the gap between tire manufacturers.

I have used Tire Rack for many years - both for info and tires. This spring needed new rears and naturally checked TR. Called dealer (Leith in Cary, NC) for price and it was about $3/tire more than TR w/o the shipping cost! And I was getting my 4 year service at the same time.

And I did not have to risk some kid gouging the rims.

Okay, I waited for the Bridgestones to come in and I'm glad I did.

Took it out for a pretty good run this afternoon (maybe 50 miles) after getting the tires done this morning - what a difference from the junk that was on the car!

Lots more confidence in throwing the car around - not of the "about to break free" feeling I was getting used to.

As well, my K&N Intake kit was at the house when I got home - my lucky day!

I installed it after dinner and went out for another little run (maybe 20 miles this time) and the car sounded and felt great!

Doubt it adds the 20 or so horse that is rumored, but it adds a little more jam that's for sure.....

And I am very happy with the Bridgestone RE-01R's. Superb track tire that is very usable on the street.

Tirerack is a good reference point to beat your local shop over the head with and get a good price.

Sorry for taking this a little off the original topic, but you are the second guy I see running RE-01Rs in a Boxster - I am the other one :rolleyes:

What pressure are you running on yours on track days?
