sorry if im outa subject, but i hit a speed bump yesterday really hard and cracked my pan.. heres a pic.

what a shame, anyways. If any of you know how much this will run me to fix please say so, also any input would be appreciated.

The bad news is that you did not crack just the pan. The pan cover is just above the engine protection shield.

You cracked the crankcase - unless you can find an alloy welder to rebuild the bottom of the crankcase - this will mean a new engine or rebuild.

If you shut it off right away (since all the oil came out) you should be ok for a weld job. If not... it will be expensive.

i cant just get a new crank case with cover? Should i go look for the piece that broke off?

Your case is in two haves and it would require removing many major components (heads, cams. crankshaft, intermediate shaft, pistons, etc., etc.).

If you could find the missing piece it would likely help the welder.

Like it or not this is major damage.

so then im screwed. Would a porsche dealer try to fix that by welding it or would they send it out? And if they have to repair it by getting a new one, how much would the part cost and the labor?

That will depend on the dealer. Prices vary everywhere... get a written quote.

I would suggest a really good independent shop.

Would you know of a place that sells porsche parts online? So i can hunt for the best price if i can not find anyone to weld the casting back together?

Just thinking.... if you hit something you could possibly claim on your insurance as it was not a mechanical failure.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada..i was thinking of blaming the city of montreal..we got really bad roads up here..and their were no signs indicating speed bumps up ahead.....by the looks of it, do u guys think it had to be a really hartd impact? I know cast aluminum is quit brittle, but didnt expect it to break off like that. looks like the weak point is the threaded hole..

That's not good.

Is your car lowered?

Repairing the case might be possible. Find the broken piece and have have someone skilled in AL welding have a go. Buy a new pan.

At this point you have nothing to lose. The alternative is a new engine, and I don't know if yours would even be accepted as a core exchange.

Chuck Moreland. About 5 or so years ago he was looking for a local Boxster to use as a pattern for a magnetic bra. My office is 2 minutes from his place. My Boxster was measured for the pattern.

Bunch of air cooled stuff around his place.

Good to see you found god and got into the water cooled world....

Here is a picture from the Parts Heaven swap meet from 5 years ago. Did not see Chuck at the meet this year.

I Remember, you had a silver Boxster. Stop by our new shop sometime, just around the corner.

We are entirely bra-less now. Our primary business is suspension parts for the early cars. We will be introducing a full line of suspension products for water cooled cars this year.

Unfortunately, I missed this parts heaven meet this year. It conflicted with a track event.
