Engine growl at start up - typical?

Car is a bonestock 2001 996TT with 60K miles.

Sometimes when I start the car after it has been sitting for 4 days or more, for the first 2 seconds the oil pressure gauge will read zero and the engine noise is rough and loud. Then the gauge zooms up to 4.5 and the engine note smooths right out. Engine runs fine otherwise.

The car has had TSB 1728 Lack of Oil Pressure on Start Up completed, with the new check valve PN 996.207.012.74 installed.

I’m just wondering if this is typical behavior or something I need to resolve.

Yes, TSB 3/00 1728 Lack of Oil Pressure on Start Up -- dated 7-27-00 was performed on the car about 2 years ago. The check valve has the light blue paint dot, per the TSB. The check valve part number in the TSB is 996 207 012 73. The part number put into my car is 996 207 012 74, which supercedes 996 207 012 73.

My 02 is doing the same thing. I crawled under the car today and found a part #996 207 112 2R w/green dot on the valve. I have a new one ordered. Can anyone tell me if this is the original culprit??? :renntech:

Rickeager Please look here Growling on start. You are saying that you order a new one does it mean the number you found is the old one or it is already modify. If you are replacing it yourself please let me know if the old one was stuck in open position and if there a way to reposition the valve or clean it to get it to operate normally. Thanks, J.P.

Yes, the number listed on my post is the number of the part still on my car (the original part???) and I will replace it with the new part next week. I am changing spark plugs and adding some go fast parts as well. I will check to see it the valve is stuck open after I remove it and let you know. I'm still trying to find out if the part on my car now is the original factory installed part??? :rolleyes:

I talked to my Parts man today at the Porsche dealer and he said if my part is original it doesn't even have a valve inside of it. I'll let you know. :renntech:

Ok I see....It is now cold in Montreal and I don't have the growling noise anymore... May be it can be also related to the grade of oil since the oil is thicker when it is cold... Anyway I am doing the oil change this week because my car will be store from november first to may first...I will also dismantle the valve to look at it and let you know....Thanks gain, J.P.

Ok I see....It is now cold in Montreal and I don't have the growling noise anymore... May be it can be also related to the grade of oil since the oil is thicker when it is cold... Anyway I am doing the oil change this week because my car will be store from november first to may first...I will also dismantle the valve to look at it and let you know....Thanks gain, J.P.

Okay... heres the deal! I picked up the part at my Porsche dealer. Part #996 207 012 74. I pulled it out of the box and it has the same part number on it as the old part with even the same green dot. I pulled the part off my car and checked the valve inside. It was closed as it should be and moved freely. I felt the tension and it felt the same as my new part. I looked for signs of wear at the o-ring seal and it looks fine. The part is a pain to remove so since I was there anyway I installed the new part. I dont know if it's made a difference yet as I still have the car down for some mods... K24/18g turbo's, 5 bar fuel pressure regulator, GT2 Intercoolers, ECU upgrade and a spark plug change. I will let you know if there's a difference with the new valve but so far it doesn't look too promising. :huh:

Thanks for the replied Rick. I did my oil change yesterday and did like you, remove the valve and it look completely normal to me so I just reinslalled it. Again it is really strange now I don't have the growling because it is cold here. I wonder if all this is not related to oil viscosity...Anyway the new oil is now Mobil 0W40 and only in may I will be able to test it because my car is now hibernating....Thanks for the info, J.P.

Hey J.P. You're more then welcome! That's what this site is here for... to help each other out! I'm looking for thicker oil myself. It has to be Mobil 1, but I'm thinking 20W50??? :renntech: It gets HOT here in Oklahoma in the summer over 100 degrees and can last several months so I want a thicker viscosity oil myself.
