I was pulling out of a parking lot in MY '97 and I heard a strange clicking sound from somewhere underneath the chassis. Sounded sort of like there was debris stuck underneath or something so I got out to inspect and found nothing stuck or hanging under the car. 2 minutes later as I'm driving down the road I see my temperature gage climbing slowly toward red line. So I put the heat on full blast and pull over and shut down. The heat is blowing cool though so I'm assuming that the thermostat got stuck somehow. I let the car cool off for an hour and drive it home as the temp starts creeping up again. Wondering if any of you guys have had to replace thermostats before and if so, how involved of a job it is or if I should just take it to the shop.

Thanks in advance

Any leaks? I would consider a water pump too if you hear funny noises still. A seized pump is (obviously) not moving water and thus why you didn't feel much at the heater, a stuck thermostat would do the same...but I think they tend to fail in the open position.

Regardless to answer you question, it's a very easy job. I don't recall the specifics but when I was troubleshooting another problem I decided to be on the safe side and swap out another factory spec (temp) stat and I believe I had to remove another coolant hose to get to it from the direct bottom, this is covered in the Bentley clearly...you do have a Bentley, correct!?!?!

Keep in mind I have access to a pit or lift to do this, I don't know if I would care to try it while the car is on ramp jacks...just to tight!

No visible leaks any where. I didn't think it could be the water pump though, especially at 66K miles. And to answer your question, I don't have a Bentley manual. Where could I pick one up? Does it outline how to change out the thermostat or water pump?

Have you heard the clicking sound again? I don't know why a stuck thermostat or bad water pump would make a clicking sound.

We'll if you use the same logic I doubt a thermostat would go at that mileage either!! So never rule our product quality or human error when it comes to system failures!

Ebay, site sponsors, amazon. You'll read me write it 101 times on this board. If anyone is asking or thinking of DIY they should own a Bentley Manual. Working on your car (unless you are an expert) is silly w/o one. Although I NEVER mind answering questions I can state this answer is clearly written in the Bentley manual. Although they don't make them for all cars they seem to for most German cars and I have one for all my Vw & Porsche...expensive but worth their weight...and if you have more money to burn (becuase you have a Porsche you must be rich (joke) get the durametric software for system troubleshooting (google/search it) with the Bentley and Durametric you can solve 92.3456% of most of your own concerns and save thousands in trips to the Porsche dealer.

I used to have PDFs of the Porsche Tech Manual to send to people for such requests but seemed to have acidently deleted them! Maybe another member on the board would have such and item if it has references to the waterpump/thermostat.

Sometimes the PET is of use too.

I have heard water pumps tick before but by that point the weep hole is leaking some fluid, but that was on a Vw and not Porsche.

I've had my 996 less than a year, so I'm not experienced with Porsche death sounds yet. I know on my old Ford the clicking nose meant the u-joints on the drive shaft were frozen, but there's not a drive shaft these cars.

Yea now you have two drive shafts (half shaft) full of C/V soon to click! Most transaxle based cars have many C/V waiting to click...my vanagon Syncro had 10 sets to maintain, break and click like a pack of crickets...

I have a 996 2001 52K on spedo and the water pump went bad this week.. It clicked loudly but only when cold.. seemd to stop after the stat opened..it was a weird sound. I thought something was caught in the belt.. . Changed out the pump and all is good and quite. The pump can be bought at most auto stores and the fix was pretty simple, a couple hours total.

Go to this link and download the 2nd document on cooling. Not as good as the Bentley but of use none-the-less.

You can get the Bentley manual at amazon for about $65.

The water pump was plastic blades that can crack and break, so even at 66k miles it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. It would explain the clicking.

I just replaced my water pump due to leaks and the thermostat..if it's your water pump, it's a really simple process..all you need is time and patience...

My car is a 1998 986 and I had to replace the pump with only 46,000 miles on the car....Renntech.org has a lot of good people to help you out...and a lot of good information to get the job done... :renntech:

COOLANT PUMP

Thanks for the help guys. I'm gonna get in there this weekend and take care of it. Just changed out the water pump in a 1965 mustang so I'm in the mode. Doesn't seem like a huge deal after looking at the diagrams.

If what I'm reading on the posts is true then I think the clicking sound I heard could have been the water pump shedding a few of those plastic impeller blades. I got the car up on jack stands today and I can't find any coolant leaks, but the rear trunk reservoir is empty. I'm fairly sure now that the pump is shot but I guess I won't know until I pull it. Would replacing the thermostat be a wise decision while I'm at it? Also, looking for some posts on replacing the water pump/thermostat and coolant system flush. I Only found the post for replacing it on a 996.

Thanks in advance.
