I'm a newbie and I need major advice!

I just bought a certified 2004 911 CAB with 28K miles on May 29th. I was the happiest guy ever! I'm thinking WOW this is much better than my CLK500 Cab! Well, I'm not so sure. As I was washing my car I noticed that the molding on the windshield was loose. I made the appointment for service and dropped it off. I left with a loaner (Cayman) and was looking forward to picking her up in the afternnon. Picked her up in the afternoon dropped the top and drove off. I'm going around 75 mph on the highway when all of a sudden I hear this clanking noise! I was driving by several trucks and thought to my self "these trucks are extremly loud and raggedy". As I am coming off the highway the noise continues. I then start thinking "This beter not be my car!" Then the dash board lit up "Oil Pressure to low" I pulled the car over and called my service rep. He was unsure of the noise and suggested that I tow the car back to service.

Today, I got the news that my Intermidiate Shaft failed and that I would need a new engine. - WHAT!! HOW!! As always, I was told by PORSCHE service that this was a freak event and that it had never occured before. I called BS squared!

What should I do? I have not owned the car 30 days yet! Do I get my money back? Trade in the car for a diffent one? My other concern is once they replace the engine, will I be a victim of RMS?

All advise is appreciated

Will the CPO pay for the new engine? If you get a "free" new engine...that would be a good problem to have IMHO.

According to the Service Department, the CPO will pay for the engine exchange. But doesn't this create all types of new issues like resale value? What would you do?

Resale value? It could go up... ask them I think your new engine will have a 2 year warranty.

Get this. If my warranty were to end tomorrow, the new engine before they even put it in would end. Any new parts added to the car will end when the vehicle warranty ends. Unbelievable...

Ironically, if you paid for the engine replacement you would get a 2 year warranty, but if it is replaced under the CPO it ends when the warranty ends. However, if you just bought the car from a dealer with a new CPO (not a preexisting one from a previous sale) you should have both the 100,000 mile limit and some significant time from your date of purchase.

Be grateful for CPO and take the new motor and go enjoy the ride. The advice I was given by the P dealer service writer on my 04, was "drive the hell out of it while under CPO, and if the IMS fails take the motor under CPO and enjoy the car, if it doesn't go, trade the car one day before CPO expires". The discussion came up because I had my car in the shop and while I was there they were replacing an RMS on an '05 997. About a week later I stopped by for a coffee and visit the shop, the same 05 997 is in the air and I watch as they jack a crate motor into it. I asked what happened and was told the owner picked up the car from the RMS repair and about 50 miles later the IMS went. 35k miles on the car, regular lease customer who always stays with a Porsche - needless to say a very unhappy customer. But soon someone gets to buy an off lease with a new motor. Truth be told I am not at ease with being told to drive the hell out of my car, I hear that as, "hope it blows up while under warranty".

gswc32, just make sure you do a proper engine break-in with the new motor. And I suggest changing the oil with the new motor at about the 1,000-2,000 mile mark.

I hear you and will follow your suggestions. But WOW! How many blown engines are out there? How do you know if your engine is the engine that came with the car? As stated above, a 997 had a blown engine with 35K..

It's interesting that no one suggested that I get my money back or trade the car in.

Lastly, do you recommend that I replace the clucth? At this point, the parts will run $625.00 with no labor.

wow, you sure that wasn't a salesman that gave you that "advice"? so much for responsible fun = /

Sure, I'd replace the clutch for $625. That's a good price for "piece-of-mind".

Yes, sometimes our engine go poooof!

Trade your car in or ask for you money back....are you kidding me? We love our cars. I'd much rather have a Porsche with a few problems (and I have zero!) than NO Porsche at all!

You are going to have a new engine. Be happy, don't worry. :thumbup:

I have no idea what the statistics are, but I'm willing to bet there are a lot more folks like me: I bought a 5 year old car with 32K on it, and, 4 years and 50K miles later it has required ZERO unscheduled maintenance in a shop, indy or dealer.

Sure, I've had to adjust the hood latch, clean out the water drains, and, finally, replace a cracked coolant tank. I hardly consider that record, over 50,000 miles to represent excessive maintenance nor an inadequately engineered car.

I am glad to hear this! I am hoping the service writer was just having a bad day when he spoke with me. I couldn't believe I dropped over $50k for a used car and I am being told to go try to blow it up. Mine has 36k miles on it now, bought it with 24k. No RMS leak, no oil consumption, runs and drives strong. But now everytime I hear a noise, it could just be an exhaust rattle, I am wondering when she will go. Good news is the CPO warranty, so for now I can still enjoy the daily ride.
