I recently returned from a week's holiday and found my 1998 996 C2, which had been locked in my garage, making a loud electronic 'bleep' (i.e. not a horn honk) every one-two minutes. I tried unlocking and locking the car again. This did not solve the problem. Neither did driving the car.

This intermittent 'bleep' occurs whether the car is locked or not. The locking itself and alarm seem to work correctly, and the appropriate LEDs flash when locked.

The underseat motion sensor and control unit were both replaced at my local OPC (due to an alarm fault) about 10 months ago, at a cost of over £700.

Has anyone experienced this fault before? Is there anything I can do manually to reset the system or solve this problem? Is the only solution to send it back to the OPC?

Go visit the dealer and let them check the alarm siren.
