Yesterday, I went to a track event at Autobahn in Joliet, Il with the PCA (that was excellent!)...

After each run (30 minutes) we had about 1 hour break... when I started the car again there was white smoke for a couple of seconds...

Then I drove back home (about 2 hours) and this morning it was back to normal (no smoke) when I started it...

It did that to me some time ago after intensive use but then back to normal the next day...

My car is a 2002 carrera 4S with 27000 miles. The only thing I have is a KN filter...

Any idea about this issue???? is this "normal"???

Are you sure about the smoke color? Blueish ( oil ) can happen after a track run.

Well I saw smoke for a couple of seconds... I would say white but with the dark windows maybe I am wrong...

I checked coolant level, no pb.

I checked oil level, no pb.

I checked the oil tube, no "marmelade/mayo" inside...

Could it be "just" because of the fact it has been pushed to its limit for half hour (well I should take that back... the pilot was pushed to his limit... the car was just pushed a little!!!) ???

It is only my second track event... I bought the car three months ago...

The first one was at Blackhawk and it was good but Autobahn is terrific...

I can not go to Road America this year (expecting 2nd child around the event date...)...I heard this one is also really good...

I need to fix this smoke issue before any other event anyway...

My car did the exactly the same thing between runs when I did a track day at Mosport a few weeks ago. I was thinking it might be the oil seperator bellow leaking but my engine is bone dry ... I also thought it might be from overfilling the engine oil and that caused it to pump oil into the throttle body during hard runs .. The car is back to normal now but I want to know what is going on before I do another track day ..

Same here... no leaks... no oil anywhere... the engine is super clean...

The oil level is at the max but not over the limit...

I used it all week and nothing...

I will not go on a track before October (2nd kid coming...) so I have time to figure out what happened (and I want ot know)...

Running your oil level at max is too high for the track (IMHO).

You need to make your own decision but I run 2 bars (down from the top) - and I don't get smoke at all.

Loren you are the Guru, so i am going follow your advice and lower the oil level. The interesting thing is that when I had the tech inspection done prior to the event. The dealer "topped up" the oil level, I questioned him on this but let it slide, I should have stuck to my intuition ....

I read your advice on tire pressure and it was really good. First session went out with the rears at 40 cold came in at 47, it was like driving on ice after 3 laps. Second session lowered to 36, huge improvement, they came up to 40 ..

note to: PF Cayenne IMHO = In my humble opinion

I think you could just snake a length of thin plastic tubing down the filler neck, and siphon out 1-2 cups of oil. This would probably be easier than going under, and draining any out. I think one bar is equal to about 8 ounces of oil.

I have a oil vacuum pump that I use for oil changes on my boat, so I had planned on just siphoning out of the dip stick tube .... good to know that 8oz = about 1 bar .. thanks

Another way is to remove the oil filter...

First I want to make sure it is that because I read that when it is oil the smoke is more blue... well with the dark windows it is hard to tell but to me it was white...

I read some scary stories about the head seal so I want to make sure I do not have a pb of that kind!

I don't think that is the cure for the white smoke, it appears the issue is that the oil doesn"t drain from the valve train back to the engine . Sounds like it pools in the cam cover , then overloads the AOS and gets sucked into the crankcase breather in the throttle body.

I'm just going do what Loren suggested and lower the oil level. I'm sure that will cure it. I also think that part of the problem is that when oil changes are done the tech fills the engine by using the marks on the dipstick. If they added 8.3 litres like the manual states it wouldn't be an issue. When i do an oil change on my car the electronic gauge is a bar or 2 below full. When i went for tech inspection they filled topped up the oil level = overfill - white smoke ....

Maybe if they used this test procedure it would have identified the problem.

That proves Porsche knows about the issue... unfortunatelly I can not afford a 2009 model right now...
