Rear Fog Lights (One?)

I have a 2001 Boxster, & only one of the rear fog lights work. I replaced both bulbs, but the other one doesn't come on.

To confuse me further, I had a new Cayman in traffic with me recently, & only one of his worked also. Is this normal? Or was this coincidence?

on past P-cars with rear fog light there's only been one light attached. I've ssen them hanging off the left side of the rear bumper. my C4S has one light in the left cluster....so I'm thinking its a Porsche traditional approach. Cheers, ...

there is only one rear fog and it will be located on the drivers' side of the vehicle (left w/ LHD and right on RHD models). You can, as some have, run a jumper wire to the opposite side housing and have both lit simultaneously. Then they'd look like your brake lights are on - like lots of Audi's runnin' around :huh:

Crazy ain't it? I wish they had explained this in the owner's manual, but like you I spent a lot of time buying new bulbs and trying to diagnose the problem with my passenger side fog light. I finally just gave up on it, only to discover later that they're actually made to function this way. Now I've switched to LED tail lights and don't even have a rear fog light anymore... oh well, it won't be missed.

The fog light is made to only illuminate on one side so that people following you don't think your braking the entire tie the light is on. I also think is a legal safety regulation in some areas.

If you search a few people have posted a DIY on making both lights turn on when your fog light is on, but I wouldn't recommend doing it.

CA vehicle code section 24602b....two rear fog lights are ok, but it there's only one then its gotta be on the left side, controlled by an amber switch visible to the driver. Seems Porsche does it right on this one..... and the fog light can only be used in limited visibility situations, not tied into the brake lights.

I only bought 2-packs of lights before I realized it may be a 1-light only setup.

Makes a lot of sense now, especially since I've came up on them again in the pouring rain (S.FL. Monsoon season).

In low visibility, it stands out, which is the point, isn't it?

The more exposure I have to Porsche engineering, the more impressed I become.

How/When would you use the left-only headlight / right-only headlight?

You mean the park lights ? Head light switch off, key out of ignition, direction indicator stalk to the left = left park light front and rear on - stalk to the right = right park light front and rear on.

No, The left/right headlights & park lights can be turned on as all-left/all-right: Key out, headlight switch position-left (of off position) 1 setting for right bank of lights, or headlight switch position-left (of off position) 2 setting for left bank of lights.

I wasn't aware of the key out, indicator stalk l/r ...

I suspect you might be confusing the city light w/ the headlight as the headlight should not come on when using the left or right park lights.

anyhow, those are marker/parking lights. Popular/necessary in Europe when parking on tight streets/alleys to show markings/vehicle in roadway w/out having to leave all the lights on.
