GT3 RS

Hi all.

I just received my GT3 RS. Bought it new and had it for 2 days and have only done 110km in total. I used to drive a 996 TT, with Stage 2 FVD, but this car is quite different - much more raw.... Beautiful to drive and look at.

A few questions for you.

1. In neutral without the clutch depressed, there is a rattling noise - does the car have a twin plate clutch? If not, is this normal for any other reason?

2. The car has PCM with navigation - is there any way that I can manually input fixed speed camera locations while driving? I couldn't find such a feature in the manual but hoped that there may be another way.

3. Best way to hook up iPod?

4. The manual was very light on break in or brake bedding. Any tips? I've read the other posts on this site in relation to break in and realise that views are divided between hard and soft break in. However, assuming that I will break it in softly:

4.1. Max RPM? 4,200?

4.2. Use or avoid engine braking?

4.3. After the initial 3,000 km, do I do second and third stages using more revs, say to 6,000 RPM for another 1,000km, and then to 7,000 RPM etc?

4.4. Is brake bedding different for the PCCB?

Many thanks for your advice in advance. :)

Nice car, congrats!

1) Clutch should not make noise or rattle.

2 & 3) ?

4) No hard braking for about 200 miles should be fine. Keep the RPM's below 4,200 for the first 2,000 miles, change the oil (I recommend an early change), and then go to redline as often as you like and as often as your wallet can afford. Don't lug the engine and don't cruise for hours in the same gear, same RPM range and same speed during break-in period...upshift and downshift.

Thanks for the response.

The clutch rattle sounds exactly like the noice made by a twin plate clutch. I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE and have some doubts about the quality of the Porsche workshop here and hence don't want to take to the workshop unless I have to.

Definitely prefer to not have them drop the transmission to check for noise if it is normal. In any case, thanks again. I'd better start looking for a good shop in Dubai.

  • 2 weeks later...

Great Color I have same combo.

Funny I have been searching for the same answers here is what I have found out:

Yes

2. The car has PCM with navigation - is there any way that I can manually input fixed speed camera locations while driving? I couldn't find such a feature in the manual but hoped that there may be another way.

?

3. Best way to hook up iPod?

Correct do not go over 4000 RPM with varrying rmps

I have an 07 and an 08 RS. The rattling is normal and not a worry. During breakin just make sure you vary the rpms frequently. As far as limiting the rpms, while the manual recommends this, all GT3/GT3RS engines are broken in on the dyno. This means full rpm and full load. The oil is then changed. You'll have to decide what makes you comfortable. I kept it under 4,200 for 250 miles and began gradually increasing the rpm until 1,000 miles when I just drove it.

vramani - Nice. You've an RS and a GT?

I've had mine white with matte black on rims and mirrors. Very similar. My front lip keeps scraping so didn't even bother getting it painted.

Thanks for the answers, vramani and sheim911rs.

I don't own one, but I don't believe Porsche's Nav system allows you to mark hot spots like some radar detectors do.

Here is the difference between Standard NAV option P16, and Extended Nav option P23:

"Extended navigation includes dynamic route calculation, automatic route recording, back track navigation, and facilitates navigation in unmapped areas."

Thanks Max Power - I must have the P23 system then.

One more question....

I've started using up to 5,000 RPM now. At just over 4,000 RPM the exhaust note changes considerably and becomes louder - it's much more resonant. I presume this is due to the variable timing?

The sounds seems louder when on Sports mode - is there an additional exhaust valve as well that opens in Sports mode?

There are 3 mufflers. 2 on the sides, and 1 in the middle in the back. In non-sport mode, when you hit 4000 RPM (and giving it enough gas), a bypass valve opens in the 2 side mufflers to reduce back pressure, and make more noise.

When the sport mode is pushed, the bypass valves open at 3000 rpm (again, if you're giving it enough gas) AND a different engine map is loaded to optimize torque between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Above 4000, it's the same as above. In sport mode, the idle also sounds different becuase the bypass valves are open. They close as soon as you start moving, and re-open at 3000.

Variable timing has nothing to do with the sound here.
