Help Removing Interior RearView Mirror

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of upgrading both the interior and exterior RearView Mirrors. I have the TSB for doing this, however, I'm not exactly sure how to remove the Interior Rearview Mirror. I've removed the "mirror" itself from the ball like housing which it made it easier to work with, however, I now need to unclip the housing somehow attached to the windshield (not the whole assembly just the housing... the new mirror seems to have a "clip" type mechanism to attach to the factory windshield mount.

In any case, i'm not sure how to remove it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You need this special tool.

Hmm, It looks like just a pair of lock jaw pliers with rubber attachments on the end. Do you just squeeze and it releases the clips? Or do you have to twist it off? The new mirror comes with that housing, so couldn't I just use a regular pair of lock pliers?

Just channel locks with sections of garden hose so the teeth don't scratch the stem of the mirror. I once did it with channel locks and a piece of card board.

The stem of the mirror has a clip on the end of it that you cannot see. The mount that is glued to the glass has a matching clip that you cannot see. When you rotate the stem of the mirror 90 degrees like Loren's drawing then the clips unlock and the mirror pulls away from the glass.

Loren's diagram shows the special tool which is a modified vice grips that have protective pads where the teeth would normally be.

Hmmm... So, now I'm unsure if I'm supossed to purchase a new Driver's side door wiring harness for the exterior auto dimming mirror or not. I purchased part # 000 044 801 03 which is the "Anti-Dazzle Mirror kit for vehicles WITHOUT memory." The kit comes with everything you except a wiring harness. However, the TSB for installing also mentions a wiring harness "for left door with maximum equipment."

I was assuming the one that's there already would be compatible with this kit? Is this not the case and do I have to purchase a whole new driver's side wiring harness? Or can I just hook up to the existing one, run the cables from the interior auto-dimming mirror i'm installing as mentioned in the TSB, and it should work?

Just looking for clarification. The harness the TSB mentions is an additional $430.00 so that's why I'm trying to figure this out.

As I recall if you buy the kit everything is included.

Hmmm, ok. Well it didn't come with a new wiring harness... so is it possible the TSB just mentions installing a new wiring harness only if you need it?

How much is this whole anti-dazzle interior mirror kit thing? B)

The one I ordered is about $60.

$60?? Oh... well, I wanted to go with the "Porsche" manufactured one, and I wanted the exterior mirror to dim as well.

In any case, I just compared the Connectors on the old exterior mirror to the new one. On the new one there are 2 new pins which are used... 1 & 2.

I also looked at the factory harness connector I have installed, and guess what... Pins 1 & 2 aren't hooked up. So... what i'm betting is, YES you need a new harness... however... I could probably splice from the pin wires, run 2 new wires alongside the factory harness, to the 2 wires by the fuse console (which are hanging from the interior mirro) and then that way I don't have to spend $309.00 on a new harness from Porsche.

Porsche confirmed just moments ago... the wiring harness is a separate cost and not included in the kits.

  • 1 year later...
U still haven't said how much the kit+wire hardness cost?

The Interior mirror was $150

The External mirror kit was $235

The wireing harness.... Porsche want $309 for it.

Have you a part number for the interior mirror? I'll order one today, I really miss the auto-dim from my Audi S4.

Thanks!
