Hi all, Any idea what is engine type and capacity from the engine number? The engine number is *6405339* . The car is a 1968 L with vin 11805379.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Loren- but I am not sure if it is the original motor. The only number that I could find on the motor was stamped on the horozontal surface of the block. there was no number on the verticle fan housing. Is there any references which list engine serial numbers to engine types?

regards

Brett

The only place in the list (that I see) a 640 xxxx serial number used is on a 1970 1971 914-6 and 1980 911SC. So then it could be 2.0 liter or a 3.0 liter based on that.

Does it have carbs or fuel injection?

The car currently has webers but previously was on solexs. Sounds like it may have a motor from a 914-6? Is there a website which shows engine numbers ranges for each engine type?

thanks

That is what I meant when I told you 640 xxxx is in two model ranges - 914-6 and 1980 911SC.

I suspect it is a 914-6 engine (which is fine).

70 914-6 engine range 640 4001>>

80 911SC (USA,CDN) 640 0001>9999

could be either, but my bet is with Loren that it's a 914-6 engine

I'm not quite sure if this is a 2.7 or 3.0 ? VIN WP0AA0910CS121178... Previous owner says it's a 1982 911 SC. Is there a way I can tell for sure?

Thanks.

Use the VIN Decoder here.

You will likely need the engine serial number to make sure of the engine - still it might have been upgraded.
