How to reset Airbag light

You need to find someone with the Durametric software, a PST2 or a PIWIS tester.

Most importantly you need to read out the fault code as to "why" it came on.

Where are you located?

I live in alberta Canada so it's gonna be hard to find someone that can help me.

I just dont want to go to the dealership and pay a ****load just to reset the light.

So my question is - what caused the light to go on?

Did you remove a seat or the steering wheel with the key in the ignition?

If not, then I would think it is in your best interest to find out why the light is on.

BTW... there are quite a few private owners that have the Durametric software as well as independent Porsche shops that have one of more of those tools.

Sorry I missed your question.

The battery was low and now the airbag light stays on.

I didn't remove the steering wheel or seats.

Very unusual if a low battery caused an airbag light.

I think you need to have the fault read out.

I know we have members in Calgary and Edmonton.

Can you pass me a couple contacts that live in Edmonton?

I'm hoping they can help.

I did a search and some other owners airbag light came on too after their battery died.

Hi Loren,

The airbag light on my 1999 996 just came on. I cleaned it the seat buckles with the contact cleaner. I live in southern california and was wondering if you knew someone who could reset the light for me?

As I said in response to your PM...

I know we have lots of folks down there but I don't know who has Durametric or PST2 or PIWIS testers.

They should also read and you should write down the fault code(s) as those will tell you exactly where the problem is.

I have a 99 boxster and from my Durametric software I get fault 48 Belt buckle passenger. I have read you need to get a new seat belt latch and resoilder the ground. Does anyone have a picture of a broken latch and where the ground is that needs to be resoldering.

It is not a broken belt buckle - the belt buckle electrical connections corrode and cause the fault. In August of 1999 Porsche changed all the production belt buckles in the cars to have gold plated contacts.

If this fault would have shown up during your warranty period - Porsche would have replaced all four buckles, replaced the contact pins in the connectors with gold contacts pins, and re-soldered the ground wires under the drivers seat (per the 5 page TSB).

Now that these cars are out of warranty Porsche will no longer do the TSB for free (at least from experiences recounted here).

Most folks try cleaning the buckle contacts with electrical contact cleaner, and/or replace the faulting buckle and/or resolder the ground wires under the drivers seat.

What did you use to read these airbag codes?

My Porsche 996TT Service Manual does not have airbag fault codes 42 or 60.

 

Fault codes 10, 11, 26, 27, 39  Ignition circuit, passenger

Possible cause of fault:
- Short circuit to B+/ground or open circuit in the wiring between the passenger airbag unit and the airbag triggering unit
- Passenger's airbag unit is faulty
- Triggering unit for airbag is faulty
