I removed my cluster today to change my Instrument Surround, and upon re-installing everything, my radio reads "PROTECT"??? I pulled the Radio fuse, disconnected the battery and connected and reconnected the cluster, but no success??? Any help would be greatly appreciated... The car is an '03 C4S...

Thanks,

ChathamG

You have a MOST car. The radio is not communicating to the instrument cluster. The cluster thinks a radio from another car has been plugged in because it cannot see the proper code.

The reports on the boards I have seen resulted in replacing a defective radio and not some work the owner did to the car. I have removed and replaced the instrument cluster on two 2003 cars with no problems.

Are all 3 connectors seated? Do all the lights and guages work? If so, then you got me. A Boxster owner on rennlist got it out of the protect mode by disconnecting the fibre optic connector at the amp and then reconnecting. Not sure why that would make any difference but that was the report.

It's been a while since this post -- how did you solve your problem? I have a 2003 Boxster with a CDR-23. While experimenting with instrument clusters we managed to get the radio into PROTECT mode and can't get it out, even with a PST2. We think we have the right code from the factory (called up a Porsche dealer). It's only 4 digits long 9( ???)

Any insight or suggestions will be welcome!

I have had this as a chronic problem on mine, they even replaced the radio at one point. I used to have to turn off the car, lock/unlock then it would start up ok and function, pia.

With the new radio, it still does it, just turn the radio on/off fixes the problem (temporarily).

The reset being used by OPCs in England is :- press Preset1, Preset4 and TP simultaneously

This did nothing for my radio. I thought it needed to be recoded by MOST software to talk on the MOST bus?

I have a 2003 Boxster S (986) with a CDR-23 that's in PROTECT mode after having the instrument cluster replaced. The cruise control also isn't working. Every few times I start the car, I can hear audio coming through the speakers of the last radio station the system was tuned to, but other than that, the audio system is locked.

From what I have read, (http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/44188-9pa-cdr23-protect-mode/http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/11598-porsche-cdr23-cdradio-protect-problem/) it seems like a dealer reset/reconfiguration will be necessary to get everything playing nicely again. I'd like to try fixing this myself if possible, or have a solid understanding of where to start to save the Porsche technicians some time... plus I'd just like to understand my car better in case I one day decide to try hacking my own KTS-500/PST2.

John-J, did you fix this issue yourself?

:welcome:

Yes, you will need a shop or dealer that has access to a Porsche PST2, PIWIS, or PIWIS 2 tester.
