Want a spare key. I recently purchased a (used) key fob and (new) blank. According to the seller, once the blank is cut, the key fob can be reprogrammed. However, I've read in this forum that a key fob cannot be programmed a second time. Please confirm.

You cannot program a remote, new or used, to the car unless you have the paper tag that came with the remote. That tag has a 24 digit code on it. You program the control unit under the seat for the remote, not the remote for the control unit. Without the paper tag or code you are out of luck. This is why I tell people to avoid ebay/used remotes.

zlawman asks: Is there a central location to get a new tag--maybe using the vin#?

None that I know of. I think, if you were able to you, could pull the remote code out of the donor vehicle and then put that code into your vehicle. You need a PIWIS/PST2 to do this. Kind of hard to do this with all the worthless used remotes you see in ebay.

I needed a spare key a few weeks ago and so I took it into the dealer to be programmed. Unfortunately, they deleted the original key from the computer. Because I didn't have the 24 digit code for that key, it became useless! They had to order me another key to replace it. When I was back in to get that key programmed, I asked the mechanic about getting the code out of the PIWIS and he said that it only shows part of the code. Not the full 24 digits. It is just used to identify which memory position (i.e P1, P2) the key is programmed. So hang onto those key code tags!!

Ross1, I hope they paid for that mistake..........

There was no argument! They paid for it!

Thanks for the info! As you said, I'm out of luck (I got the remote on ebay). Dealer's asking $300 to order a new key ($150) and program it ($150). I know I must pay the programming fee, but where can I get a remote (preferably new) besides the dealer? Considering the $50 I've already wasted on ebay, unless I find one for less than $100, I'll end up paying more than what the dealer originally quoted. Thanks in advance.
