Antifreeze

I know this has been addressed a few times but it has raised more questions for me than answers. I have a 2000 986 and would like to top off my colant reservoir. I have read the Pentosin, PEAK, TEXACO, etc. recommendations.

Lauren....what product would you recommend?

Thanassis

I went with the Porsche stuff. It is $35 a gallon but you actually get 2 gallons since it is 50/50 with distilled water. Plus, if you're just topping it off I would use the same thing as what is in the car which is probably the Porsche coolant, unless you've changed it. Also, make sure to avoid air bubbles, they can cause problems.

If just topping off, use distilled water (1$ a gallon). You do not want to mix coolants! Only put the Porsche stuff in if you are sure its Porsche stuff in there!

When I changed a radiatior I switched to Prestone. Ran tons of water through the system first. 50/50 Prestone Long Life and distilled water. No problems yet in New England 0-100 degree weather, traffic, hard driving, no problem. Needle stays right on 180ish.

If going off-brand, then do so at your own risk. But so far, so good. If topping off then its a no brainer: water.

Why is it so bad to mix coolants??

i did not know this is an issue and went and filled with some "Pride" product.

I have to re-fill here and there until my expansion arrives , its on back order.

If you mix the wrong two non-compatible coolants you can create a "jello" like substance.

That's one I haven't heard before. How likely is that to happen? I just use the Prestone 50/50 "all vehicle" (i.e., non-corrosive to aluminum).

So about a month ago my expansion tank got cracked.

i was not aware of the jello risk and i used "Pride1000" coolant i used

Is this going to create the jello

and if so, what are the risks attached to the jello.

and how can i fix the jello??

Thank you

Thank you for taking the time and looking into that web site, i didnt even have the brains to do that for my own freaking car :)

car runs at normal temp and seems to be fine with that coolant.

but i will def do a flush when the new expansion will arrive and go to a Porsche recommended
