hi guys,

just a quick question on the rear transmission and rear diff gear oil. do i need to change them if my 01 boxster S has only 40000kms on it?

if not when do i need to?

No, but changing 7 years old gear oil is no hurtful to any thing.

Changing it before it is due will not hurt anything as long as you refill it with the correct lube. Several have posted that they saw improved shifting characteristics after changing the gear oil.................suggest reading my posting on this subject in the 986 DIY section.

thought if i do not need to change the oil then i cud save up some dough for other mods.

come to think of it 7 years is a long long time. so most probably i'm going ahead with the change. its going to be another 40000kms at 80000 kms before a major oil change so i guess its best.

It's pretty easy to do yourself. You just need two special bits and some expensive synth gear oil. The bits and about 3 liters of mobile one is probably about $60 if you DIY. I'm not sure when you are suppose to do it but it can't hurt. It is easiest to do when doing the clutch, RMS or other work since accessing the drain and fill holes is a little challenging and requires removing some underbody panels.
