cooling fans....how many?

Warm weather has meant I've heard my cooling fan for the first time, but only the near side one, should they both be on or do they work incrementally? if there is a problem with one of them are they easy to access?

Do you mean the fans behind the radiators in the front ? Low or high speed missing ? They should work continuously with the air condition on. They are accessible after removing the inner wheel well liners.

Yes, should there be two, one either side? I could only hear one working.

Check in this order:

1. Fuses

2. Relays (swap with the other side).

3. Turn on AC - do they both then work?

Ok thanks again for that Loren. So I've just been to look at the fuses and there is no fuse chart , anyone know where I can get one. Also where are the relays for the fans, is that them in the back n/s (uk)? Next thisng is I don't know how to tell if the fan is on low speed or high speed, never heard another one, seems to be blowing quite hard though. Can I assume that if only on works when the a/c is on, only one works, if you get my drift.

There are 2 radiators in the front of the car. Each radiator has a fan. The fan has a high and low speed. Each fan has 2 relays, one for high and the other for low. Each fan has one fuse. C8 is the fuse for the right fan, and C10 is the fuse for the left. In the fuse box you see 5 rows of fuses. C8 and C10 are in the 3rd row. C8 is the 8th fuse and C10 is the 10th, counting from left to right.

As the engine gets hot the low speed comes on. As the engine gets very hot the high speed comes on. If you turn the a/c on then both fans come on in the high speed, no matter what the engine temp is. This is because the a/c cars have a condensor stuck to each fan and the a/c condensor cools the hot a/c refrigerant via the fans.

Start the car when the engine is cold. Go to the front of the car and you should not hear any fans. Then turn on the a/c and go to the front of the car again. Both fans should be on in high speed.

If the fuses check out then the relay tray is under the dash above the steering wheel. Picture shows the 4 relays. All 4 are the same so you can swap them around.

Many thanks, will investigate tomorrow, definately only one fan working, noticed its the same side that has had a new rad in the past, its all nice a shiny.

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!, it was the fuse, couldn't wait till tomorrow, just been out with a torch. Suspect when rad replaced someone blew a fuse and previous owner never noticed. Can I assume they will work as cooling fans when it gets hot with A/C off?

That is a safe assumption. If both fans come on to cool the condensors after the fuse replacement when a/c is selected, then they should also come on to cool the engine radiators when the engine is hot and the a/c is off..
