Well, just a suggestion but Mobil One website suggests 10w-40 Synthetic. I actually use the 15w-40 in my 944 and have for years. I also use the Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil in the transmission/final drive. Works great. Thousands of miles plus an autocross or two with no problems.

Thanks Robert. Being a dedicated track car for me, the 944 Cup guys recommended 15W50 mobil. Going to Red Line 75w90 for the tranny. It has 210K miles, second motor. The high banks on the NASCAR tracks gets the oil away from the pickup, so the experienced guys use the heavier oil. And still, I had to replace number 2 bearing already...

Sign me up for the high banks of a NASCAR track! I've had this car at Sebring a couple times for DE with no problems but I'm sure on an extended high banked corner you could probably hurt it. I've heard of the # 2 bearing problems and I had found some info on Clark's Garage on some tricks to prevent the #2 bearing failure. Looks like most of the mods would require the engine to come out and some machine work to be done, accept for the Accusump system. Anyway, you may already know of these tricks but if not, I hope you find the info useful.

On a track like that, or any track really, you should be using at least a 20w/50. We use a 25w/60 on the track. I would not use that brand either. Look for something that contains high ZDDPs. Use the internet to read about these. Very important on our era of cars.

I use Brad Penn Racing Oil - 20W-50 (I live in TX). Best thing I've ever put in my car.

For tranny oil I use Swepco 210 (no, that's right - not 201...but 210). I have a Fidanza flywheel on my car and get some low gear whine when coasting - the 210 is the best I've put in there that keeps it relatively quiet and shifts smooth. I've also used Amsoil's Severe Gear - good stuff. Both have the neccesary LSD additives for my tranny.

I'm not a fan of the pure synthetic stuff - I think in these older engines they tend to leak more and they also don't contain the ZDDP additives that are needed.

The Brad Penn stuff is as good as you can buy. Just pick up a few cases and don't worry about it anymore...

I'm also planning on changing the oil in my 944. Just bought Castrol 5W-50 synthetic. It was the only 5W-50 I could find and I read on some of these forums that 5W-50 is now recommended. Is this true or should I return for something else?
