Engine Compartment Fan Warning

After 30 minutes of track time this weekend at Sebring, the temp gauge was near the upper end of the 180 mark. An engine compartment fan failure warning appeared intermittently but the temp never went up past the 180 mark. Upon parking the car, the fan ran normally.

This series of events occurred three times in one day with ambient temps around 85 degrees. Since I have never experienced this warning even on 90+ degree days, I wondered if this was a chicken and egg thing.

In other words, is the fan failure warning triggered by a certain temperature, in this case a little over 180. Or is the fan actually failing at speed but operating normally when parked.
