Oil change question

I am planning on doing an oil change on my 98 Boxster. I haven't been able to find a filter wrench (my local dealer told me they don't sell tools), so I am going to order the wrench from Sunset Imports tomorrow.

My question is: can I go ahead and change the oil and replace the filter a week later or should I just wait until I get the wrench? The reason I am asking is because I already have the car up on jack stands and it would be really good if I could get the oil changed since the car is perfectly horizontal. My thinking was that when I get the wrench I could just jack up the left rear wheel and replace the filter, without having the level the car horizontally and lift it up on 4 jack stands again...

Hi azzaro... go to Autozone they have a wrench for Mercedes that fits exactly in our filter cover... I paid 6 bucks for it! OEM oil filter "B" cap wrench #25401. This wrench has the 14 flat 74 MM size for 3/8" drive.

I went to 2 Autozones and they didn't have the "B" wrench. I'll call around tomorrow and see if other stores carry it.

With that much Mobil One I think I'd wait untill I could replace the filter also.

You should give it a try just with your hands. However most times the plastic cannister is on so tight you need a tool.

If all else fails, try a normal strap oil filter wrench.

If you have a Pep Boys locally they should have a wrench that fits. An A251B that I bought has the 14 flat 74 MM size for 3/8" drive and it was for a Ford Focus. The key is to look for the size, 74MM and 14 Flats, not for the car application.

OK, I finally found an AutoZone that had the "B" cap wrench. Of course it matched and worked like a charm. I have new oil in the car now :)

I did however find an adjustable one, like so:

Will this work? It says it's good for 2 1/4 to 4 1/2. Just worried about it being metal and the cap being graphite...

I have an adjustable one something like that I use on my motorcycle. One of these days I'll have to try it out on the Boxstir.

The diameter of the filter cannister is about 3" so it should work.

Look out for cracks in the plastic filter cover with this system Tool Pants.

Kunkstyle, contact your local Mac Tools rep as he has the correct oil filter wrench. I wouldn't use the type in your pic as RFM stated they can cause pressure points and damage the filter housing.

Considering that plastic canister I would not use anything that placed uneven pressure on the diameter such as the ones shown above, especially the strap type. The "B" cap wrench (I forget the brand) is more than adequate and a whole lot cheaper than the Porsche product.

Again considering the plastic canister, you should use a torque wrench. But don't do what I did!!!!!!!! Lying on my back with the long handle torque wrench over my head I failed to feel the wrench "click" at the setting and over-tightened it severely before realizing it. I had to loosen and retighten it, and the plastic can on the aluminum engine binds terribly tight and it takes much more to loosen it. I had to wrap the filter in duct tape to make it fatter so the "b" wrench would not skip/slip, then tap it onto the canister. It's a wonder I didn't ruin something in the process. All worked out in the end, but lessons were learned that I thought I'd share………although ashamed on my error.
