Hi,

Wanted to ask if 996 Porsches 1999 are a good buy. I heard these early 996s have some engine problems compared to the 3.6 liters found on 996 2002 going up. Prices on the 1999 996s, 3.4 litres are inviting and way cheaper compared to the 3.6 litre. If money is not an issue off course i'll buy the 3.6 liters. Question is does the 3.4 engine have lots of problem? how much will it cost if engine fails? is it better to just wait and save more money to go with the 3.6 liter 996s. My brother drives a 3.6 liter 996 and his car is a blast. planning of buying a porsche in the next 6 months or earlier.

thanks, please advise.

That’s a loaded question. Do a search of engine failure on this site and the 996 forum on Rennlist.com and you’ll find out why.

You could always get a '99 996 roller and put a 3.6 or 3.8 in it. Motors aren't hard to find on eBay, and you could always just get one from the dealer. You'll spend less and get amazing performance.

IMHO, (which is not worth what many of the senior posters is)...if you can find the right optioned 99 FOR YOU for $10k less than a similar 02, get it. If the engine fails, no problem, the new one has a warranty and by most anecdotal info, will not fail. If it doesn't fail...you're up $10k +...now, in my case, I bought an '02 because it had all the options I really wanted, PSM, Litronic bi-xenon, heated, supple lumbar, & 18" wheels, even the right color, plus I like the face lift look better. I paid $32k for mine with 37.5k miles. I cound NEVER have found a similar optioned 99 for $22k, so it was a no brainer for me.

Actually everything I have seen is the 2000 and 2001, were pretty good. Then issues came up in 2002 and a few years beyond!

Don't let anyone fool you, putting in a 3.6 or a 3.8 into a 1999 to 2001 car is not as easy as it sounds. There is wiring and ECU issues to contend with. Do a search on this site and you will see the issues!
