I spent some time going back and forth about whether to install a B and M Short Shifter (SSK)or to follow the recommendations of some of the folks on the other forums, and decided to install the 997 shifter in my 02 996TT. Loren helped me install it, and I find that the throw is a good 30% shorter, plus the action is smoother and the gears engage more postiviely. I was having some issues with a perioidic missed downshift from 5 to 2nd on the old shifter. That's all cleared up by virtue of the positive action of the shift mechanism.....I also have the added benefit of the fact the 997 shifter only costs me $156 from Pelican, whereas the B and M runs $200.

I have a B&M, but keep on postponing the installation, since I heard that the shift becomes harder in the winter - I live in NJ. Plus I am not sure It would not cause the missing gears problem.

They taped Tool Pants doing a B&M install - is on his DIY DVD's.

It is pretty simple once you have done it a couple times (I stopped counting at 100 :lol: ).

If you are having shifting problems now the B&M will not help. Start by using the factory tool to properly align the cables. If that does not cure the problem - then the bad news is a may be internal in the transmission.

There are many messages on Rennlist and other boards about this. Putting the standard 997/987 shift in a 996/986. People claimed the 997/987 standard shift has shorter throws. I did not believe it because I saw both side-by-side and only saw a cosmetic difference - could be my eyes. I asked them to measure the before and after throws to rule out subjective options or "feelings."

They did and reported about a 10% reduction. When the 987 came out Porsche said it had a shorter throw. I thought it was due to a change to the transmission, not the shift lever. So maybe it is the shift lever after all. This throw reduction, if true, is less than all the aftermarket short throw shift kits on the market.

If there is a local owner who wants to try it then let me know. I will measure the before and after throws.

I am just about to change my standard 996 (2004 C4S) shifter to a 997 type, as it's recognised here in the UK to have reduced throw, by approx 10%.

I need, of course, to remove the Gear Lever Knob.

When I lift up the Gaiter it looks like the Knob is secured to the shaft with a small 'Allen' (internal hexagon) set screw.

Can anybody tell me if this screw is all that holds it on the shaft? The screw is VERY tight, and I am afraid that in trying to unscrew it I may damage the internal hexagon, and then I'll never get the Knob off!

Yes, the exclusive option knobs are held on by a set screw. I don't recall mine being too tight. It may just have some thread locker on it.

I am getting ready to do this install. I have removed the center console but I am trying to figur eout what i do next. I have seen the references to the B&M install but i need to know where to begin. Is there a DIY specific to the 997 installation? Thx!

I finished installing the 997 Shifter. This took about 40 Mins, max. Probably faster for me largely because i have removed the console numerous times in the past and knew were all the hidden screws were.

I took the car for a spin, and this is far better than stock. I would guess the throws are 20% or so shorter with a lot less slop than the stock shifter.

The B&M instructions were very helpful as well as the other posts on the topic here. Many thanks for the assistance.

Just completed the installation of the 997 linkages assy. it was an easy task. The only thing to take care of is to be careful with the leather on the console and the parking brake cover. Also to mark properly, before dismantling, the two push rod assy. Like Skymast I have used the B&M shifter assy removal installation PDF (15 pages) to do the job and it help a lot to locate the hidden screws... But it is late now and don't want to weak-up the neighbors. Road test tomorrow morning...

Just came back from a small road test and the shifter feel a lot more precise and stiffer. The throw, it is hard for me to say since my car has over 40,000 miles and the old shifter was worn, but I can say it is a big improvement. Money well spent...

I was a bit over zealous on my initial report of a 30% throw reduction thru the installaton of the 997 shifter...the actual throw reduction is about 15%. My apologies for my cumulus nimbus report....ie...pulled the number out of the clouds. It actually does reduce the throw, but no where near the 30% I initially reported....BUT, it's still the best feeling and smoothest SSK I've had thus far and I've had the B and M, OEM, another Schnell aftemarket knock-off, and now the 997.

I would feel confident in saying that for the Sunset Porsche price of $157, ifor the money.....t's one of the better mods on the market.

Sounds more like a cumulous rectum...or nimbus rectum report (pulled it out of your *ss)...sorry chuck I couldn't resist. Why have you been through so many SSKs?

I tried them out on different cars when I first hit the Porsche scene....like so many, I was influenced by a lot of the hype from the Mod Squad, and spent unnecessary money on "stuff"....it takes a while to learn that a lot of what is posted is either trendy or smoke and mirrors.....so a guy learns as he goes along that some things just aren't worth the investment. On the Schnell, it was the only company I could find that offered a money back guarantee....the B and M was what everyone was touting at the time....and the 997 is what the consensus seems to swear by....including me now. It's not trendy or smoke....it's a proven item at this point. Or maybe I'm just indecisive??? You'll probably like that explanation best.

I have a 03 TT and I would like to improve my shifter, and by all the previous post it seems that the best way is to go for a 997 shifter.

My questions are: is it the normal 997 shifter (if somebody has the part number) and if it is a simple replace or do I have to buy something else to do it.

It is the stock 997 shifter that you need buy. Sorry, i dont have the part number but in the USA it is approximately $160. It is a 'simple' replace and no other parts are required. In short, you need to remove the center console, then remove / replace the shifter (this takes less time than removing the console) and put the console back in.

Part# is 99742401000 and as per skymast it is about $160.00. Easy to install as long you mark the old push-rods. I have used the B&M shifter installation instruction and it help a lot to do the job.Short Throw shifter installation instructions.

the 997 Shifter is still my best and cheapest mod!

I just had this done and I have to agree. 1000 times then the 996. Perfect throw and very direct. Can't wait to try it out on the track.

I have done a lot of search for the b&m instructions but I can not find them. If someone has it would be great, so I can try the 997 shift .
