I have a 2001 911 TT. I'm having difficulties shifting from 2nd to 3rd smoothly. All other gears are smooth. Porsche recommends a new transmission for $14,000. Is this a DIY project if I have the proper equipment or should I let a seasoned mechanic handle this one?

Anyone know where I can find a transmission?

Have you asked them about a Porsche Exchange transmission (Porsche rebuilt)?

I show an MSRP on those of only $8049.65 (with exchange).

There are 64k miles on the car.

I am in the process of putting the car on the market to sell and now they say I need a transmission. The car has been maintained so I'm not sure how the transmission can just go after 64k miles.

I'd say it is time to find a non-dealer to work on that car. Unless they've pulled it apart, how do they know it can't be repaired with new synchros, or what not? Perhaps they figure 'screw him, tell him it needs a new tranny, mark it up 50%, see if he's desperate'

Lou;

Three possible causes are 1) a damaged operating sleeve, 2) a bent shifting fork, or 3) worn synchros. Any of these are fixable at a fraction of the replacement costs you were quoted. The trans can be pulled without droping the engine, however it's a bit tricky putting it back in. I just did it with the help of my local independent shop. I highly recommend finding a seasoned Porsche tech with a lift to pull it, then send the trans to one of the rebuilding experts for repair. Unless there is something major wrong (does'nt sound like it) you should be under $ 5,000. The "experts" can be found in Pano or Excellence, (there's also one in Ohio). You are likely looking at being down for 3-4 weeks. Good luck.
