Glove box light microswitch - 996 Coupe 03

Hi,

This is my first post so apologies if its wrong or in the wrong place.

Please could you advise on how you get to the microswitch that controls the glove box light? The light does not work and the bulb is fine so I presume it will be the switch as all the other internal lights are functioning?

If you have to remove the glove box, please could you provide some instructions on doing so as I cannot see them listed anywhere online

From the service manual:

Replacing microswitch and interior light

Note: In the case of a defective microswitch, the complete wiring harness 4 must be replaced!

1. Remove the glove compartment.

2. On the retaining bracket 2, press the locking tabs apart. Guide out the microswitch 5.

3. Insert a plastic spatula into the side of the interior light and press out. Disconnect the electrical plug connection.

Installing microswitch and interior light

1. Plug in the electrical plug connection of the interior light. Press the interior light 1 into the cut-out of the glove compartment.

2. Press the microswitch 5 into the retaining bracket 2. Note the coding of the microswitch.

3. To fit the glove compartment, engage the electrical lead 4 into the clip 3.

4. Install glove compartment.

If you decide you want to do this let me know and I will post the glove compartment removal/installation procedure. It does not look very hard.

Removing the glovebox

1. Unclip plastic clips 2, Guide the insulation downwards out of both corners (arrows).

2. Unscrew fastening screws 3 from the glove compartment.

3. Unscrew fastening screws 4 from the glove compartment.

4. Disconnect the electrical plug connection in the direction of the arrow.

5. Lift the glove compartment upwards (arrow) and guide it out of the dashboard 1.

Installing the glovebox

1. Connect the electrical plug connection in the direction of the arrow.

2. Swivel the glove compartment into the dashboard in the direction of the arrow. Note the position of the locating peg A.

3. Screw in the fastening screws 4 in the glove compartment. Tightening torque: 2.5 Nm (2 ftlb.)

4. Screw in the fastening screws 3 in the glove compartment. Tightening torque: 2.5 Nm (2 ftlb.)

5. Position the insulation, making sure that the corners are inserted correctly under the dashboard. Press in the plastic clips 2.

Addendum: USA 2002 996 C2

The location of the screws in Loren's picture was not the same for my car. I had two at the very bottom, three on top as show but also TWO on the sides, which were very hard to get to because the glove box door is in the way. You basically need a torx with a swivel head to get to those. Major pain, the rest was trivial.

I wonder if anyone can help. I removed my glovebox to identify the issue of the light not working correctly. It appears that one of the two wires from the micro switch located at the side of the glove box has come away from the micro switch.

Do anyone know the Porsche part number for the whole wiring harness? This is the one with the micro switch, plug 1 to the glovebox light and plug 2 to the car?

Any help would do.

I have the opposite problem. During the course of re-installing my factory CDR23 radio in my 2004 C4S, I noticed that the glove box light never goes out. I guess the micro-switch is stuck in the 'on' position.

 

I guess I will need to replace that harness, but can't find it cheaper than $47 from porschepartshub.com (the new online store of Sunset Imports)

 

On another note, can't see to locate the antenna cable that should plug into the radio. The aftermarket one used its own Sirius XM satellite antenna.

Wow, that was a much easier fix than expected. 7 screws, 10 mins start to finish. Now my light goes off when the glove box is closed and my battery is not draining.

 

Incidentally, my stealership quoted $1400 to repair the clutch pedal switch (wiring had been bypassed), cabrio roof latch, rear brake pads, oil change and glove box light.

 

I did the whole lot in under 1 hour using $190 of genuine Porsche parts. Quite a markup they are making... Now what should I spend that $1200 saving on?

I needed to repair my dampers on my 2002 GT2 and your graphic and direction helped tremendously. Thank you for sharing this Loren!

 

Side note, I thought I needed new dampers and now that I have them out, one just needed to be put back together and the other is missing the rubber stopper and the white plastic cap on the end. Anyone know if I can purchase these separately or have a fix? Would love to save from having to purchase $70 OEM ones knowing that these could be easily repaired. Picture below.
