02 S Key isnt working... HELP

I just bought an 02 Boxster S (65k miles in good shape) I am in the midst of running through all the little things that need to be done to the car to make it 'like new' and what happens? My remote stops working on the key! Yeah the key int he door thing always works, but what is the point of having a remote when it doesnt work. So far here is what I have done:

1. Replace Battery in key - duh.

2. Tried resetting the central locking system by disconnecting the battery. All this did was make me realise I forgot where the previous owner said he put the radio code.

3. Got the car to go into 'standby' mode. Turned key in door, alarm went off, stuck key in ignition. Alarm is off, everything works fine, just not the remote...

Any suggestions?

Have you tried the other key if it works? I bought a 01 996 last year and the remote range was terriblily bad, I had to point the key to the A Pillar on the driver side's window to get the remote to work. Chaning battery on the key did not gain any range. If it's simular to my situation, there you might want to take a look at this topic:

have you tried Sunset Imports (Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost)?

They sell just the heads for $88.45— $105.55

Excuse my ignorance regarding the keys but If I have a "chewed" head of my key can I simply buy a replacement head and do a swop? If so how does all the coding stuff work?

Yes if the metal part of your key is fine you can just replace the head. It will need to be programmed by a dealer to match the alarm unit in your car.

Any "good" dealer should the programming for $100 or less.

I have a My2004 4S Cab so I expect the key will be the expensive one with the top and trunk buttons onboard. So 100 bucks for the key and another 100 bucks for the programming thats $200 coverted into UK pounds £100 - this is an expensive repair for a key as I am not to confident that the OPC here won't be more than $100. I gonna ask the PCGB if anyone has had it done recently.

Anyone with a PST2 or PIWIS can program a key for you - provide the key head has the tag with it's unique number and an IPAS code from Porsche.

You can not program a key with a special IPAS code directly from Porsche (theft protection). Some OPS's might get the IPAS number for you but some won't.

The key head is 2 plastic parts that snap together. If the chewed part is the half with the buttons, then Porsche sells just that part so you do not have to buy the entire remote,

It is exactly that, the buttons look like the previous owner had a nervous disposition and used the key to repress his anxeity by chewing on the them. He did so it much that they are dificult to press. Could have been whilst waiting for his service bill in a UK OPC.

Then you can buy just that half. Believe it or not it does not cost that much and since you are only replacing the half no programming is involved. It is as simple as replacing the battery.
