I have a 1985 911 and want to replace the instrument bulbs. When I remove the instruments I find red plastic bulb holders, but I can't figure out how to remove them to get to the bulbs. They seem to be sprung, but pushing and twisting does not seem to do anything. Does anyone know the proper method to remove the bulbs?

Thanks!

I too have an 85, and just addressed a problem with the speedometer illumination bulbs. I believe the ends you are refering to might be for the turn indicator bulbs (if on speedo). Not sure about the other bulbs, but the the illumination bulbs for the speedo are actually located in two small protruding cylinders around the 10 and 2 o'clock position. There is a bulb receptacle, which resembles a flat end cap with a wire running through it, which has to be pryed out, as they are designed to slip in and out, albeit tightly. I used a knife edge to loosen them, and then a small screwdriver to get them loose. I found that a simple cleaning of the receptacle and bulb end brought the bulb back to life. Hope this helps.
