Door glass hitting convertible top frame....

Hey there,

This really is the place for trouble shooting questions to be answered.

(the mechanic didn't really have a good answer to this one!)

I have a 2000 996 convertible - the door glass on the drivers side quite often (at least 50% of the time) hits the frame of the top when the door is being closed. (such as it doesn't roll down that little bit like the passengers side)

The passenger side goes down a little bit more than the drivers side, and clears the frame without issue.

Not sure if it's related (but most likely is knowing my luck!) - but the drivers side window also makes a little "thud" when it is just about all the way down.

Is this maybe an adjustment that needs to be made - or is it a mechanical issue that needs parts to be replaced (sensors or a motor?)

i just picked up my 2001 996, i think the driver and passenger side main windows are supposed to go down slightly before, and then go back up AFTER u close the door, and there should be no THUD related to the windows at all....

If the "thud" is not indicative of a broader problem, then you probably have the typical issue with the micro switch that tells the window to lower slightly, then rise again after closing the door.

With the door open, and window fully up (showing a failure of some sort) use a screw driver to nudge the latch on the back side of the door. If you observe the window to drop down, then it is likely the micro switch on the inside of the door at this location that has failed .... or slipped out of the proper position. If your mechanic did not consider this very common problem .... then you might consider finding a more knowledgeable mechanic.

If the "thud" indicates a broader problem, you can always try the all purpose window fix: run the window all the way down, then all the way up to "retrain" the window memory.

There are also many threads here regarding overall window mechanism / motor / track system problems .... along with instructions on how to remove door panel to investigate.

I just ran into this same issue. I noticed that the temporary work around is to assist the front top of the drivers side window down with my hand. The window will move up properly after this. It jus tnever drops back down.

I will try the reseting the window memory with rolling down with switch and holding it for 10 seconds then the same for rolling up.

There should be 3 micro switches per door. outer/inner handle to drop it then latch switch to roll it back up.

with the door panel removed it is very easy to determine,,,

but this sounds very much like also having a loose regulator cable.

I just realized my problem is not the same. Mine is that when I open the door the window does not drop the 1/2 " that it use to drop. It seems to go up just fine and its only my drivers side door. There is no thud involved.

If you are getting the same result when you pull on the inner door handle as when you pull on the outer door handle (i.e., you hear the electric motor engaging for a split second, but there is no corresponding retraction of 1/2 inch of the window), then most likely it is your window regulator. It has probably gotten stretched, frayed, or a small plastic part that serves to keep the cable taut has broken.

In all cases, the regulator must be replaced.

If you do replace your regulator, pay particular attention to the different location of the window stop for Boxsters as opposed to 996/997's so that your window lowers to the correct level. It's the same part number for both applications, but that stop must be located correctly for the particular model.
