I think I need a new starter for my 99 996. The car starts fine when cold but cranks very slowly when hot. Barely starts in fact. Anyone have any advice or instructions? I tried the search but it just seems to give a long list on non related things.

How about a source in the Toronto area? Is it just the dealer or are there other options assuming it's "standard" Bosch item.

Thanks

Colin

How old is your battery? If it is 4 years or older - then it's time for a new one. Have it tested (specific gravity) if you are unsure.

Any other strange electrical problems? - if there are then you could have a bad ignition switch.

Might not hurt to check the cables on the starter and the starter solenoid - as well as the engine to chassis grounds.

Good advice. Many thanks. No other strange issues. The ignition switch was replaced last year to fix those. The battery is about 3 years old although I've been noticing the same but less severe issue for a couple of years which is what made me think of the starter. I'll double check what the battery voltage does while the engine is hot and cranking slowly but checking the connections sounds like a good plan. Thought I'd left those kind of problems behind me when I sold the 928 :)
