Hi All

Just wondering if anyone has removed the seats from a Boxster (987)? I have done a search but to no avail.

I am keen to do some track days in my Boxster and I would like to fit a four point harness.

I see that PorscheShop sells some little brackets that attach to your existing seatbelt mounts so that you can clip on the lap belt.

Problem is to fit the one near the tunnel (centre of the car) I guess you would have to take the seats out to get access to the nut.

The seats slide forward quite a long way but there seems to be a lot a wiring under there - airbag I guess. Also the nuts that screw threw the runners to the floor seem to be some sort of special security nut - a normal spanner / socket doesn't look like it will fit.

Has anyone see some detailed instructions with pics if possible on how to get the seat out?

If it's the same as a 986 (and I think there are some similarities), be careful not to disconnect the main connector under the seats without having the ignition off and the key out of the ignition. If you don't follow this procedure meticulously, you will set off the airbag warning light and it cannot be turned off unless you have access to a PIWIS, PST 2, or Durametric.

As to the four bolts that hold the seat rails to the frame of the car, (again, if it's the same as a 986) they are Torx head bolts, but I have found that using a small (1/4 inch drive) 10mm socket will fit well enough to be able to unscrew and screw the bolts back on without rounding them off.

Disconnecting the main electrical connector under the seat is just a matter of taking a good look under the seat once you remove the four bolts on the seat rails. You must pull the side of the connector outwards on a sort of a diagonal while separating the two parts.

Again, if it's the same as a 986, you can also pull the seats out and lay them on the ground next to the car without actually disconnecting the main electrical connector.

4 point harnesses (except Schroth ) can be more dangerous than no seatbelt at all. They don't allow you to move sideways in a rollover which can save you from breaking your back. But they do allow you to slide under them. 5 or 6 point or stay stock IMHO.

I decided it was time to change the serpentine on my 987.1 this morning and so had to remove the seats (well not a necessity but doing a bit of cleaning as well was in the plan). This thread gave the little oommphh required to do it as removing seats on the 987 seemed to be still a vague thing. So removing the four Torx wasn't a big deal but the wiring was more subtle as the connectors are bigger than on my Echo (no seat air bags to start). took a bit of studying the big yellow connector to realise there is a black slider on its side, pull it all the way out (1-2cm) and the connector splits, bingo on the driver side. On the pax side there is an extra gray connector that has a red slider, same method applies and you're done.

Hopefully you have disconnected the battery, fumble on yellow connectors can end badly with power on. This is just a warning to prevent your health.

+1  You should never work on any air bag wiring or connectors with the battery still connected; it is pretty easy to accidentally set one off and seriously injure yourself.
